I don't know what you have used in the past, but (and this might be because I'm a real noob at NLE) I would suggest Adobe Premiere Elements. It's a one-time purchase and you can use the software forever. You can install it on 2 computers. It does have features that are close to Windows Movie Maker or similar, but at least in expert mode the workspace is that of a pro editor.
