Let's Name The Top 100 Action-RPG/Adventure Video Games
Re: Let's Name The Top 100 Action-RPG/Adventure Video Games
Kingdom Hearts is an A-RPG, but Earthbound isn't.

Awesome, I definitely want to add this then. It has a nice leveling system with a variety of cool upgrades(like the godly bane moves) and it's just a fun, epic action game that makes full use of the license in every wayBurningDoom wrote:No, that applies just fine. I just thought they were JRPGs, and like I said, I never played them so I wasn't entirely sure. I was planning on adding Parasite Eve, so I see no difference.Gamerforlife wrote:
Well, in both games you move around and have full control of your characters during combat. They're real time rather than turn based. I think that's how some people define action rpg. How do you define it? Are you thinking more along the lines of a Diablo, dungeon crawler? Or maybe something like Gauntlet Dark Legacy. I wanted to add this

but that could easily just be classified as a hack n slasher

Isn't the thread title "Action-RPG/Adventure video games?" Pretty sure Earthbound qualifies as an adventure game...o.pwuaioc wrote:Kingdom Hearts is an A-RPG, but Earthbound isn't.

I always thought Earthbound was just a straight up, regular rpg with turn based combat

For what it's worth Gamefaqs lists Earthbound as a straight up RPG where they have Kingdom Hearts & Zelda: A Link to the Past listed as Action RPG's. I personally see a big difference between the two and wouldn't include Earthbound on this list but I'm only one person and it's not my thread. Pretty sure Contact is also just a regular JRPG though a quality DS title.

Nope, just turn-based RPG.Retrogamer0001 wrote:Isn't the thread title "Action-RPG/Adventure video games?" Pretty sure Earthbound qualifies as an adventure game...o.pwuaioc wrote:Kingdom Hearts is an A-RPG, but Earthbound isn't.

To me, ARPG's are any game that you have total control over your character while engaging enemies in real-time scenarios. Standard RPG's are attrition based battles, usually with loading between battles, and on separate screens from the actual in-game world. So, IMO Earthbound is out.

Absolutely not. The battle system is anything but turn-based.jmbarnes101 wrote: Pretty sure Contact is also just a regular JRPG though a quality DS title.
