On Modern Gaming
Re: On Modern Gaming
I stumbled across an article trumpeting that Demon Souls' servers would be up until 2012. I knew nothing of the game, so I decided to read a little about it. It was released in October of 2009. This is modern gaming? Being proud that the game servers remain operating for 2.5 years?

That title wasn't particularly popular.Zing wrote:I stumbled across an article trumpeting that Demon Souls' servers would be up until 2012. Also, that's one game, on a console, in which the online will die out after some point.

Re: On Modern Gaming
was online a big part of Demon's Souls anyway?
I wouldn't say this scenario is the definition of modern gaming, no.

Re: On Modern Gaming
I suppose it would depend on who you ask how big a part of the game it is. It augmented the single-player aspect of the game. When it goes away you will still be able to play it.noiseredux wrote:was online a big part of Demon's Souls anyway?

Let strength be granted, so the world might be mended...so the world might be mended.
Re: On Modern Gaming
There are two aspects to the online. The first is the messages and bloodstains that you look at when you first go through the game. On your second play through they really lose their appeal, since you already know about the ambushes and secrets.noiseredux wrote:was online a big part of Demon's Souls anyway?

The second is the actual interaction with other people, either as helpful blue phantoms or evil black phantoms (and by extension, the general PVP using red eye stones). Blue phantoms were a nice feature but everything in the game is soloable, so losing that isn't a big deal. Similarly, the black phantoms were an interesting challenge except for the fact that a lot of people who did it would use one of the many overpowered strategies and it became more of an exercise in frustration. And then the PVP some people were really in to, and would spend time learning to be the perfect duelist, while others didn't care.
I would say that Demon's Souls without multiplayer is fine, especially when you compare it to a game like Modern Warfare, where the single player is pretty tacked on.

Like I said, I don't know much about the game. All I know is that pretty much every major gaming site has an article announcing this. I assumed it was a big deal.noiseredux wrote:was online a big part of Demon's Souls anyway?

Hell, I still don't understand the name. "Demon's Souls"? So there is a character named Demon and he has many souls? Or is this a misuse of the possessive.

It's a Greatest Hits title, and it got a sequel.RyaNtheSlayA wrote:That title wasn't particularly popular.

Re: On Modern Gaming
For a title to be Greatest Hits it only needs to sell 500k or so copies. By comparisons, Dark Souls sold the lifetime amount of Demons Souls in about a month.sabrage wrote:It's a Greatest Hits title, and it got a sequel.RyaNtheSlayA wrote:That title wasn't particularly popular.
Also, it should be noted that a game doesn't necessarily need to join the Greatest Hits program even if it meets the requirements.

Probably a misuse of possessive. It's what happens when the devs are Japanese.Zing wrote:Like I said, I don't know much about the game. It's 800,000. You're right, it's 500,000, but the fact alone that it's a GH title means that it sold better than 90% of the PS3 library.RyaNtheSlayA wrote:For a title to be greatest hits it only needs to sell 500k or so copies.
