The problem is that let's say a given forum goer can financially participate in one activity, SS or auction. Every one who decides to go for the SS means one less participant in the auction. And the management here feels that we'd rather have people participating in the auction.saturnfan wrote:I'm just saying it could be accomplished with little to no controversy. People are making it out to be like it would be a monumental inconvenience, when it really isn't. Participation would also be optional. If said person felt they could not afford it, then guess what? They don't have to participate.noiseredux wrote:so you don't see how bidding on auctions costs money? And that mailing the winning items costs money? And how during the holidays people already have plenty of other things to spend money on?saturnfan wrote:I am all for a secrete santa and would be more than willing to organize it. I can't see how it could possible interfere with the charity auction. People are capable of doing more than 1 thing at a time.
Buying a gift and mailing it isn't that difficult, and I don't see how participation in a secrete santa is so mentally taxing that it would adversely effect the charity auction.
If the date is a serious issue, we must remember that Jesus had to wait until January 6th to get his presents. We could do the mailings after Dec. 25th.
However, if nobody wants to do it, then so be it. I'm just speaking frankly on the matter.

Most of the stuff I have that I'd be doing SS with are good, but have very little financial value (Gran Turismo 2, Turok 2, etc.) so these aren't things that would even fetch any money in the charity auction. Also, I never take part in the charity auction anyway, so there'd be no loss.Luke wrote:How's bout donating your secret santa gifts to the charity auction instead?

Didn't read the whole thread, but just voicing that I'd be down to participate in a Secret Santa if it happens! I have reasons that make me not want to give to the recipient of the Charity Auction this year.

I see where the mods are coming down on this and ultimately its their call. I have to say though - Saturnfan's argument is pretty much where i'm at. Participating in the SS is optional and it wouldn't affect my participation in the other one iota. And as we consistently say (and I strongly agree), that this is a charitable, respectful, and intelligent community, yet we are being led to believe that we apparently are not capable of participating in one without it affecting the other.
I don't have a dog in the fight so could really care less what is ultimately decided - I am actually more put off by the stance that we need guidance and explanations of what could theoretically happen. Sounds like a couple politicians I know - and don't care for.
