and remember, think late 90s. :wink:
Awesome video. The N64 was truly amazing and mind blowing when it first came out. Super Mario 64 especially was probably the biggest leap in video game technology ever.
3DO? Sega Saturn? PS1? Those all came first and brought the 16-bit era to the 3D era before N64. Much bigger leaps in video game technology, IMO.
3DO, Sega Saturn, PS1: leaps ----------> loading... -------> this much (32-bit)

N64: leaps -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------> this much. (64-Bit)

For the record, Super Mario 64 (June 1996) also was released before Tomb Raider (Nov 1996), Crash Bandicoot (Aug 1996), Gran Turismo (1998), and Spyro (1998). I'm not familiar with Playstation release dates, so I may be missing some, but the big 3D stuff from off the top of my head came after Mario 64.

There was 3D stuff on the PS before SM64, but it looked awful:

Sort of like the "revolving legos" thing someone mentioned earlier.

I think you're all missing the point. The argument wasn't which system did it better, it was "What was the bigger leap in technology." Going from 2D to 3D is without a doubt a bigger leap in technology than 3D graphics going to more polished 3D.

^Ok, you are missing something very important if that is the argument you are making...now. Nintendo announced they were going 3D before Sony announced they were MAKING a home console.

So Sony in essence steals an idea, rushes a product and thus they are the revolutionary? Nintendo took their time, developing a much more powerful CPU AND made a game that had significant substance...oh and a CAMERA control on their controller, instituted well before Sony and the others.

My Nintendo Flame-boy is coming out peeps!

Exactly. Back in the 90s, what may look awful now, didn't look awful back then. Jumping Flash looked bad? I actually just played the sequel last week, and boy do the bold colors and cute character designs make for a refreshing visual fest (amongst today's Unreal shades of brown and more brown), even for today. I don't think we'll ever reach that graphical leap in generations such as that of the 80s and 90s.

There was quasi-3D stuff on the SNES (Starfox, Drakkhen, Super Face Ball), that doesn't make it "revolutionary"...

Again, I'm not arguing who did it better. I'm arguing which was the bigger leap.

And Sony didn't rip off Nintendo, in fact, Nintendo ripped off Sony. Sony was making a disc drive for the SNES then after it was in-development Nintendo decided pull out. This pissed off Sony and since they were already developing the hardware anyways Sony decided to put-out the original Playstation.

But regardless of who screwed who, or why the other systems came first, it doesn't matter how it happened. 3DO, Saturn, and PS1 beat N64 to the punch.

Seeing Tomb Raider or Crash Bandicoot the first time after playing 2D games like Sonic the Hedgehog or Super Mario World was a huge experience back then.

And yeah, as was pointed out, there were 3D games before those systems like Doom and Star Fox. But they were few and far in-between. Those early systems like 3DO, Saturn, and PS1 brought it to the forefront of gaming. That's what made them revolutionary.

Okay, I don't have the exact dates of these game releases memorized. Sorry. But that still doesn't change my point that those systems came out first and made the technological step first, not N64.
