Re: Dark Souls Hype Thread of Preparing To Die!
Do you have a good fire resistant shield? I think I had the Dragon Crest shield, which really helped with the fire damage. Just hang out near the front of her until she does her fire whip move, then move to her side and attack. Don't be afraid to run away and recompose yourself, especially if there is a lot of lava on the floor. I found the summon helped distract her a bit so I could unload on her rear section. Otherwise just equip some good fire resistant equipment and run away when she starts to get up on her hind legs (big fire explosion incoming).

I got lucky and got a Black Knight shield to drop, which has 95% fire block. It's not the chip damage that's getting me, it's getting an unlucky sequence of attacks that lets her get in a big hit when my guard is staggered. I'm going to have to pay more attention to her signals and see if I can back off some when she goes to do her big aoe.

Well, I just beat the Belfrey Gargoyles. They weren't hard at all since I cheaped em' up with the drake sword and I had the Solair of Astora helping.
Now I have to make my way down to The Depths and eventually Blighttown. I'm afraid of both. Like, a lot. Mostly because of the frog things I've heard of that curse you.

Re: Dark Souls Hype Thread of Preparing To Die!
I got this game day one.Man it was so hard at the begininng i felt like giving up, Instead i chose to do a bit of levelling up by doing the opening bit of undead burg over and over. This helped me a lot and made me get to grips with the combat again.
I still find myself getting owned by cheap shots but thats the nature of the game.I have only done a few bosses so far.Ive done the first bell boss but cant remember where the second bell area is?
Im trying hard not to consult a wiki at every turn but i know from my demon souls experiences,It is very possible to miss a multitude of items, npc's etc.
I have summoned a few randoms online and i couldnt believe how helpful they all were.Helping me with lvls and giving advice.Makes a welcome change after all the loud mouths on other games.
In short if you find yourself getting destroyed at the start, Ask yourself if the character is right for you?Theres no shame in trying out all classes to get one that suits you.

Unofortunately (fortunately?) Dark Souls seems to limit your character choices. In Demon's Souls you could easily succeed with a pure mage character, but that isn't the case here. Strength seems to be the most useful stat until you can get your hands on a lightning weapon.
Oh, and the 2nd bell is down in Blighttown which means you have to go through the depths first and fight the gaping dragon.

Well, I beat the flame spider woman and rang the second bell, then after several tries I killed flame c'thulhu. Turns out the flame spider telegraphs like the end scene of Independence Day, so once I learned her tells I never got hit by her AOE that staggers me (except that one time I got caught on terrain) and so never took any big hits. But the area past flame c'thulhu is clearly out of my league at the moment (going by the damage I do) so I need to turn back and I'm going to head to the new area that opened up now that I've rang the second bell. I'm probably going to detour through the forest and kill a few bosses there first.

So I just rang the first bell and then decided to dick around in dark root forest and ended up going into battle with the butterfly boss. I was surprised by how easy it was.
That drake sword if a life saver though. I don't know if I would be able to handle this game without it.

What? I thought that was like an end game area. How did you even find it?

If you go down to the blacksmith in Undead Parish you can run past the Titanite Demon and you're in the forest. Getting to the butterfly actually isn't too bad, and it's one of the easiest bosses in the game.
I've been messing around a bit myself, I explored the Great Hollow and the Ash Lake, skipped that Hydra, killed the Hydra in the Basin, killed the butterfly, and ninja'd past the Forest Convenant mobs to get my set of Stone Armor. Now I'm going to start exploring Sen's Fortress.

Oh dear. Saw the Limited Edition in the supermarket. Had a bunch of Nectar points to burn. I am now prepared to die. However, considering I got pretty far on Demon Souls I'm expecting not to die as much as some of you series newbies.
