I say play them in order. DMC2 is a sequel 1 to, DMC3 is a prequel to 1. DMC3 is the best (but hardest) of the DMC games, so I would recommend beating 1 first to see the story and boost your skills. If you want to skip DMC2 you certainly could, as it is easily the worst of the bunch (though still not as bad as it often made out to be).J T wrote:How important is it to play the prior installments of Devil May Cry before moving on to 3? I bought the boxed set and I was thinking I would play through it sequentially, but I haven't finished the 1st one because it's really effin' hard and I have heard the 2nd isn't that good. Part 3 is still in its shrink wrap. Should I play it, or is it worth sticking it out through the first one, then playing the 2nd, then playing the 3rd?

I think we would be pals, because I agree with your sentiments on God hand as well.ujnhunter wrote:High five! I think we'd be pals. Also... God Hand = GOTY FOREVER!brunoafh wrote:Every time I see Deadly Premonition mentioned I am obligated to say this.

What dsheinem said. Funny if you thought DMC1 was hard, have fun with DMC3... haha.J T wrote:How important is it to play the prior installments of Devil May Cry before moving on to 3? Back on GoW, I'll admit the first two games were decent. I did run into some glitches like Ack though, I remember getting stuck in places and having some weird glitches that basically got me killed. I think GoW3 was total crap though and didn't even bother to finish it, but I played and saw enough to know the entire game I'm sure (also heard it was short anyways). That game was 110% an on rails experience, nothing but a chain reaction of triggered events and such, I've been trying to think of the way I used to explain it but the words aren't coming to mind... but basically, it's like YOU are not even really playing the game. Follow this insanely strict linear path (which I didn't really complain about with the first two), cue more insanely over the top cutscene like battles riddled with QTE's, etc. At times I feel like the Uncharted games are like this as well. I guess if you guys enjoy playing interactive movies it'll be your thing, but I have a very hard time getting into games like this. Let me walk around levels uninterrupted and have more freedom. Kratos' weapon that spins around hitting everything on the screen at once and has barely any combo's or intricate timings with epic counters/dodging and stuff also makes it pretty flat for me.
Ninja Gaiden, the DMC series, Onimusha series, and plenty of other action games from the last gen I think totally destroy the GoW games (and GoW even pulled tons of idea's from the PS2 Rygar game that came out years before it, you never see anyone giving that game props). These games don't hold your hand, there's so much more depth to weapons/items, way more combo's and intricate skill based gameplay that makes ME feel like a badass instead of just playing Simon Says with QTE events. And damn, plenty of those games have laughable B-grade stories, but I'll take that stuff over dealing with the annoyance that is Kratos.
On the plus side, I played a tiny bit of Dante's Inferno at a friends and it was so much worse it was atrocious.
Re: Underrated Games
I know DMC3 is supposed to be one of the most difficult games of all time, that's partly why I want to jump ahead and try it. And I'm sure I can finish DMC1 if I play it long enough. I'll just die a lot of times along the way. I'm so tired of fighting that damn lava spider though. How many times is he going to come back?Xeogred wrote:What dsheinem said. Do you have the Special Edition or the original DMC 3? I know you said you got the triple box or whatever but I don't know which one it comes with. Probably the Special Edition.J T wrote:I know DMC3 is supposed to be one of the most difficult games of all time, that's partly why I want to jump ahead and try it.

Re: Underrated Games
Yeah that's what I was getting at. The original version is brutally unforgiving, but so satisfying. Having to restart the entire level over every time you die or use a gold orb is so harsh. It's strange that not even the original Japanese version is as hard as the one we got.
The Special Edition still gives you the option to use the original difficulty if you want with the whole Gold/Yellow thing at least. The extra features of the Special Edition are great though. Being able to play as Vergil and Bloody Palace mode pretty much doubles the game's value.
dsheinem, were you able to get on board with DMC4 or no?

QFTdsheinem wrote:The God of War and Devil May Cry (1 and 3) games were hands down my favorites across all genres from the last gen. DMC3 is one of my top 5 favorites of all time, and GOW II would certainly make it into a top 5 from last gen. So yeah, I'd say give them a go.
I really don't understand what's not to like about any of these games, as I have never run into glitches with any of them. I can sort of see how some gamers may be turned off to the difficulty of the DMC series, but not retro gamers who grew up on harder games. They are almost universally hailed as some of the best games made in the past decade, and GOW2 is usually held up as the most polished (read: non-buggy) game on the PS2.
Don't get the hate either... I'm really loving both God of War II (haven't played the first one yet though) and the Devil May Cry series at the moment. I'll have to pick up the first GOW too when I next see it.
