Re: Guardian Heroes
Yeah, don't compare this game's versus mode to Smash, that's just dumb. It's not even the same style of fighting. I'd DEFINITELY argue that SoRR has a deeper and more balanced combo system than this though. GH seems to be about simple abuse, whereas SoRR is about risk and reward.wip3outguy7 wrote:While I make it no secret that GH is quite possibly my favorite video game ever, I can find plenty of faults. I think its biggest flaw is that most people probably aren't going to like it the first few times they play it. Hell, I didn't get it until 10th or so time playing. Something clicked and I couldn't get enough of it. The ridiculous pixelated graphics made sense, I threw away my "what is right" mentality and started abusing the ever loving shit out of the juggle system. With time, you can easily spot your character in the mayhem and the crowd issue goes away.SplashChick wrote:That's true, but for a game that many people STILL hail as "OMG BEST GAME EVERRRRR", shouldn't it be able to hold up to titles that it inspired? I mean, yes, it may have implemented all of these ideas first, but that doesn't mean that they were done well or applied to their best potential. I think the games I listed prove that by utilizing them so much more effectively. I guess what I'm saying is that it may have had the idea first, but we don't herald the Virtual Boy as the crown jewel of gaming because it put 3D on a portable(if you can call it that) 15 years before the now successful 3DS.
Guardian Heroes goes against a lot of beat em' up trends. It is not easy to pick up, there aren't any power ups or potions and there is no roast under the barrel. You are encouraged to abuse your magic... and when the mana runs out, the game demands you beat the snot out of anyone and everyone to get it back. The more stylish you are, the more combos you pull, the more mana you receive. Streets of Rage Remake comes very close to allowing you to use and abuse your specials, but I would argue that it still doesn't quite reach that balance and finesse that this 15 year old Saturn game has.
When it comes to the RPG style leveling system, again GH's downfall is the time requirement. It takes a lot of dedication on the player's part to realize the depth it offers. Randy and Genjuro get absolutely blazing fast if you upgrade their agility. Upgrading physical attacks may be pointless if you take a chance and upgrade your luck, as it may reward you with devastating physical and magical attacks. Upgrade the mental ability of your character and the size and power of your spells could make DBZ characters feel inadequate. But the issue here is time and multiple play-throughs. You don't get to keep anything when you start a new game either and that can be off putting to some.
And we haven't even talked about the battle royal mode yet. This game pre-dates Smash Brothers by about a year... and it still stomps even the most recent offerings in that series, IMO. Everyone should be so lucky to experience an all out Guardian Heroes 6 player, everyone for them self, brawl to the death.
I also have a soft spot for all of the "WTF Japan?" moments the game has:
"That fuckin' guy has a Kung Fu rabbit for a pet... that catches on fire and chases people."
"It's a medieval theme and now we're fighting robots."
"The golden skeleton guy just took my guy's sword and... Wait, he's going to follow us and beat people down for us? He just nuked the screen? What the hell is going on here?"
"Dude, I've been juggling this dead body for like the last 3 mins and I'm gaining experience points for it."
"Disobey the Sky Spirits."
"Old woman VS screen filling dragon thing."
It's this game's seeming randomness that is the very definition of Japanese games of the mid 90s. The story, while nothing award worthy, is a blatant rip-off of hilariously over the top anime such as "The Slayers" that were once so popular, but we will likely never see again.
I dunno, maybe I'll try it a few more times, see if something clicks like it did with you. Maybe then the flaws wont seem so glaring.

Use caution when tossing the word "dumb" into a response for a statement that someone clearly marked with the IMO tag.SplashChick wrote:Yeah, don't compare this game's versus mode to Smash, that's just dumb. It's not even the same style of fighting.
See, I'm torn between the two games. Until SoRR came along, Guardian Heroes was my favorite beat em' up of all time. But SoRR is just so damned good. I have resolved myself to calling each game "different". It's impossible for me to directly compare the two. It's not even the same style of fighting. SoRR is, IMO, the pentacle of beat em' ups in that traditional formula. Guardian Heroes is a beat em' up with the heart of a fighting game (no really, the engine was sourced from Treasure's own Yu Yu Hakusho 4 player fighting game for the Mega Drive). There is definitely a risk and reward system in GH's mana/physical attack system, especially in the later stages where powered up enemies can break your chain of attacks and ignoring the guard button = death. It isn't really a contest for me as I like each game equally at this point.SplashChick wrote:I'd DEFINITELY argue that SoRR has a deeper and more balanced combo system than this though. There is definitely a lot of fun to be had if the game clicks with you. I'm not saying it will. I know plenty of people who don't care for the game, no matter how many times they play it. When I said around 10 plays to click with me, I meant over the course of years. LOL. I knew it was something special, but it took me awhile to find it.SplashChick wrote:I dunno, maybe I'll try it a few more times, see if something clicks like it did with you. And don't obsess over the flaws too much. Everyone universally agrees that Marvel VS Capcom 2 is a horribly broken fighting game. Yet, that didn't prevent it from becoming the legend it is today.

Re: Guardian Heroes
Comparing Guardian Heroes to currrent genre games is completely unfair. Considering its age it still is a fine game, sure other games took design concepts it uses and implemented them better. That's called progression of a genre. It seems like you just like to argue with people here.

Not if people herald it as the pinnacle of the genre as they still do today. Just because something is older doesn't mean it's automatically better.gradualmeltdown wrote:Comparing Guardian Heroes to currrent genre games is completely unfair. If you don't like the game, whatever, but obviously no one here is going to be like "ya know, you're right, Guardian Heroes sucks". The posters here have explained in detail why they like the game, so just GTFO if you don't like it and quit arguing with everyone over nonsense.SplashChick wrote:Not if people herald it as the pinnacle of the genre as they still do today. You're the only one being hostile. Nobody said Guardian Heroes sucks or anything to that implication, I simply want to know why people hold it with such high regards.brunoafh wrote:If you don't like the game, whatever, but obviously no one here is going to be like "ya know, you're right, Guardian Heroes sucks". Re: Guardian Heroes
I didn't say anything about hostility. There's 6 pages of people explaining why they hold the game in high regard, and you're obviously implying that they're seeing it through "rose colored Saturn fanboy glasses" in every one of your posts.SplashChick wrote:You're the only one being hostile. Re: Guardian Heroes
Okay, the way you just butt into this conversation and started making silly accusations, it's obvious you're just trying to antagonize me. I'm putting you on ignore because I'm sick of it and would like to have a constructive conversation with people who care about the game.
Re: Guardian Heroes
Still have yet to play this game. Been tossing around the idea of modding my Saturn since buying this game is out of the question for me. After what I've seen this should be good. Treasure hasn't put out a game I didn't like.
One question, I know there is 6 player versus mode but what about the actual story mode? How many players is that?
