Good for you, but that's really irrelevant to a non-American, really. I might as well ask you to name the 26 Brazilian states. Who cares, right?

I know about Amazonas because of today's Brazil quiz on Sporcle. :P

I was proud of myself for getting 37 out of 50. :D

Really, can you imagine living your entire life without ever venturing outside your state? Let alone country.

Plenty of people never do, particularly if they live in a really big city like NYC, because they have everything right there, no need to travel.

It's not quite as simple as that, at least at the higher levels. I often see PhDs in Math, Physics and EE all working together on the same problem and/or publishing to the same journals and presenting at the same conferences. At the same time, a B.S. in, say, Physics isn't going to really be able to do much "discovery of the principles of the universe."

The most theory-focused engineers are still on the applied side of Math and Physics, but at the same time, there are very applied mathematicians and physicists. One of the most applications-oriented guys I know is actually a Physics PhD. At the same time, my favorite undergrad EE professor did not care about applications at all. He didn't really get along with much of the rest of the department, and mostly hung out and published with a few Math professors.

Most of the world doesn't get to travel. Really, voluntary travel is a luxury.

The spelling isn't stellar, but we can get you. More impressive than the fact that you know the name of 15 states (Distrito Federal is the capital, doesn't count as a state, like Washington D.C.) is the fact that one of them was Acre. How do you even know that?

I almost moved to Acre for work. I took a shot in the dark for which states would get the World Cup. I figured since it has good facilities and a new airport it would win out. The company let us pick one and if it was chosen they would fly us down there. It means putting your life on hold for three to four years, but the money was very worth it.

I'd have to be paid a lot to put my life in limbo for 4 years. Either that, or the work would have to be very enjoyable.
