Re: My Darkstalkers Collection

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I have something to share:

I finally got around to testing Darkstalkers Collection for PS2. I use the Hard Drive via network adapter, so I installed it to disc using Winhiip, then booted up OPL.
Well, that didn't work, as it just freezes at a black screen right after the "now loading" screen.

So I went back to researching a fix. Eventually, I came back to this thread and emwearz's post started to make some real sense to me:
emwearz wrote:It should work with Swap Magic and ESR. The only way it wont work is via HDLoader because it uses a multi .elf loading system. I will have to get hold of a copy and give it a try, now I am interested.

EDIT: As I said above with the Multi .elf the issue is apparently when you select a new game, it rechecks the region of your console.

EDIT EDIT: I saw this possible solution.
Anyhoo, get ISOBuster, extract a .ISO of your DVD. Then get the Memento Disc patcher and patch the ISO. You can confirm it has been patched by opening the ISO again in ISOBuster and seeing the UDF file system renamed to DVD_TS or something like that. But the regular ISO file system will be the original still.
So I tried that Momento patcher...with no luck.
But another forum (I think on psx-scene, but can't remember) mentioned patching with "ESR Disc Patcher". So I unpatched / repatched the ISO using that and reinstalled the game.
BINGO! The game works perfect now.

I'm still using OPL r520, but most revs after that (after r515, I hear) should work as well (same goes for Street Fighter Alpha Anthology).

Anyways, I hope this helps someone. I don't understand why Noiseredux's patched game didn't work work through ESR, but at least there's a solution. OPL can load games installed on a USB device (in the right format), so that should be a workaround for his PS2 Slim system. I doubt the slower USB 1.1 would be much of an issue with arcade ports.

I ran into that PS2ESDL in my recent searching, but heard almost nothing about it before that. I think it is supposed to work with Vampire Darkstalkers Collection, but I had heard the same thing about OPL, that the USB option had more success.
eamwearz's post had me thinking that the region difference combined with the multi-boot iso was the real problem, so I concentrated on that, before I had to break down and find/buy a spare USB drive to hold the one game that wasn't working for me.

In any case, OPL is what I use, and seems to have more support, so I'm sticking with it.
But it's cool there is yet another option.

Also, I discovered (from psx-scene feedback as well as my own trial) the latest builds of OPL (r590, for ex.) seem to break VDC. Just a heads up in case anyone tries.
Not really a huge deal for me, as I don't mind choosing between a few builds for best results, if it comes to that.

Hey, Noise
I say re-acquire the game by other means if you still want it. If Capcom doesn't/didn't want the business over here, that's their loss.
(Hopefully no one bites my head off for that comment, I normally don't encourage piracy).

OMG you guys I got it to work! I still had my ESR patched file that didn't work but I read that burning it using DVD Decryptor would "rebuild" the image properly and... IT WORKS!!!! I'm so happy this thread was bumped so that I'd think about this again. :D

Cool stuff, noisey. Collecting seriously for one series is a good idea, I've been thinking about doing it for awhile.

Noise, almost every time I read one of your posts it makes me want a PSP really bad. I know I've probably mentioned this already, but I still love the Darkstalkers collection.

I don't see a reason to NOT get a PSP man! They're so cheap now, and the games are even cheaper!

I'll take a new pic of my Darkstalkers collection soon. I have a Lilith figure and a strategy guide now too...
