I don't know about that. I think they still release at least a few VC games for the Wii each month.

Here are some recently released VC games:

Mario Party 2
Darius Twin
Sonson
Commando
Fighter History Dynamite
Magical Drop III
Ghost n Goblins
Exed Exes

They found it's much more profitable to release a single rom on a disk   . I wouldn't say they abandoned it just yet. It's just that they have to keep on releasing new titles for years to come, and if they release all of them at the same time, the service would lose momentum when it's out of games to release. Plus it seems to be a pain to license some of these games (you can forget all the Capcom Disney games). Still hoping Microsoft will sell Rare to Nintendo for a bag of chips, so we can get our Banjo Kazooies and Goldeneyes on the VC.

$250 for a handheld is insane, absolutely insane! I really hope the public doesn't doesn't approve this price. Because if they do, that means the next set of actual consoles that come out will probably be in the $500+ range, which means I will be playing retro games only.

To be fair, the only reason Nintendo thinks it can get away with charging so much, is because people suddenly think that paying 500-600$/€ for a phone is normal.

Wow, I don't want to believe they are region locking it :(

I'm actually a brand-new Wii owner (talk about being late to the party!) and bought it primarily for Virtual Console. It's true the release schedule has slowed. But I've spent about $150 so far on VC titles and maybe only have a quarter of my 'want' list thus far. So although there are some gems missing (Yoshi's Island or Star Fox!), there is really far more than enough for most. I'm actually really impressed with the VC, and I was guarded after reading the opinions at IGN and elsewhere. With that being said, maybe a year will pass and I'll finally have my wish list cleared and the drought of fresh releases will bother me more.

edit to add... honestly I don't quite see how the 3DS VC could fare "better" than the Wii's VC yet. The Wii VC hosts 8 different platforms of emulation - plus some old arcade hits - 3 of which are Nintendo systems. So far the 3DS VC hosts GB and GBC. And there's no way nostalgia will sell as many GB/GBC games as are present on the Wii VC, just based on number of titles. I also question if the nostalgia buyers haven't mostly moved on to gaming on their iphones. I say this because, as a late 20-something, it is painfully obvious to me that the DS market has for some time been skewed much, much younger. Yes, you and I read hyper-geeky blogs about the latest Atlus RPGs, for example. But a visit to any Gamestop shatters the illusion of our cloistered online-exclusive population. And I don't know how compelling Wario Land II is to today's 13-year-old....

For a handheld, the 3DS comes with a surprising amount of tech in it: a gyroscope, an accelerometer, a pedometer, 3 cameras (2 for taking 3D photos), wifi, a touchscreen, a 3D screen and backwards compatibility.

And it comes packed with a cradle and a bunch of (useless but nifty) AR games.

I think that's worth $250.

Shame about the battery life and region locking though, but I think I can learn to live with that.

Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Sega Game Gear, Neo-Geo Pocket Color, Wonderswan (Japan-only?), and possibly the Virtual Boy.

Nintendo has plenty of options right now.

I would think that Nintendo would love to put Virtual Boy games on the E-Store [Is that what they're calling it, now?]; they've had a very good sense of humor about the system, so something like this would actually be feasible, just to bring things full circle. Also, the idea of playing NGPC games officially on the 3DS is freakin' awesome. And Wonderswan imports? My wallet is begging for mercy at the thought.

$250 for the 3DS is a really good deal considering all the technology crammed into it.

Calling it now, PSP2 is already doomed 8)
