Oh really? I thought the ending was the best part of that game.

Resident Evil 4 (GCN)

I know I sound like a wimp but it's just too damn realistic for me. I find myself so wrapped up in this game that I am afraid to look behind the next corner for fear of having my head speared by a pitch fork.

I hate to shelve a game that really is quite good but I don't think I have the correct temperament for this one.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Whenever I hear about people that can't complete survival horror games because they get too scared, I wonder if there is something a bit off about me. I love that kind of game and the more it can scare me, the better. However, few actually scare me much. I guess I'm just kind of a dark person.

Uh, Flake...have you played any of the others in the series?

What's interesting to me is that a game has a better chance of scaring me than a scary movie or tv show does.

Me too. I have very very rarely ever had a game scare me. The original Silent Hill and RE1 and RE2 both did when I was 17 or 18, but they were some of the first in the genre that I had ever played and really not much of anything has scared me in games in the 10-15 years since. Same thing happens with horror movies.

That isn't to say I don't appreciate a good attempt to scare, and I certainly like the uneasy feeling created by well crafted survival horror (e.g. Silent Hill 2, some parts of the FEAR series, etc.), but I am a bit jaded when it comes to finding any entertainment genuinely frightening to the point where I can't enjoy it, have horrible nightmares afterwards, feel sick, etc.

I shelved (and later sold) it for a different reason. Not enough ammo! The game basically wants you to be able to perfectly headshot everything in order to keep enough ammo around to beat the game. Incredibly frustrating. I can't get through the game without running out of ammo. (Wii version is the one I played.)

This is true for me as well. Having that interactive component that gives you a modicum of control over the situation, but not nearly enough to feel safe, is what makes horror games scarier than horror movies. Though, sometimes the passive helplessness of being in a movie is scarier than being an active participant in a game. It all depends on the content and how well it's presented.

I wonder if nightmares have something to do with my tolerance for horror genres. I have a lot of bad dreams. They are usually end of the world, bloody global apocalypse dreams where it's brother against brother in a violent struggle to stay alive in a world that is no longer worth staying alive for. I'm probably a bit desensitized to this stuff now. I'm sort of like Eric Cartman when he closes his eyes.

I have tried nearly every game in the Resident Evil series - and given up on each for the same reason. I was assured that RE4 would be different since it is more action oriented.
