I think I understand exactly how Noise feels. I'm as excited as hell about the 3DS but I remember clearly back to the days leading up to the N64. I just didn't get it. I would look at my Super Nintendo and think 'I'm still happy with this. This is enough. Why do we need the Ultra64?'
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

It's a handheld with a 3D capabilities. Handhelds are a lot more complicated to make than consoles with the same computing and graphic power, plus this has a touch screen and 3D screen.
Think about the original DS. Just for grins, let's say it close to a portable N64 in power. The N64 launched for $200 in 1996. The DS launched in 2004 for $150. That's 25% cheaper and you get screens. I haven't been paying attention to the 3DS since I don't care, but someone earlier in this thread threw out some wild capability claim of 360/PS3 for the 3DS. Let's reel that back a bit and say they are managing to squeeze something roughly like PS2 or oXBox (this is speculation, I could be way off). The PS2 launched in 2000 for $350, the XBox was released in 2001 for $300. So even if we averaged those to $325 and took a comparable 25% off, that's still $244. However when the DS was launched touch screens and small LCDs weren't new technology where as 3D screens are. Therefore it's going to be more expensive.
Anyone that was thinking less than $250 was on crack.

I think $300 is insane for me to pay for a handheld.
I don't think I've ever spent more than $100 on a handhled and I don't intend to start now. I don't care about 3D, don't think the graphics or games look very impressive (many are ports/updates), and will not be picking this up on launch.
Still, if someone gave me one I wouldn't turn it down

Which is why you won't be importing one (which would force you to have to pay $300).

I think you summed up all that I was thinking. Especially the not caring about 3D part.
I'm actually thinking of going handheld exclusive from next gen. For the first time in my life I have 2 current gen consoles, and I can't say I'm enjoying them as much as my DS and PC. Probably because the genres I like most can be found on those platforms. So unless something changes next gen I'm sticking to a 3DS and PC.
Also I think noiseredux has a point about the current line up for the 3DS. of all the games we have seen screens from I only want Kid Icarus, (but I want it bad).
BUT
The support the 3DS has down the line is amazing. Some games I can't wait to get my hands on. Megama Legends 3, Kingdom Hearts, Saint's Row on the 3DS and of course Final Fantasy 6 3DS remake (yeah it is a remake, but when it is such an epic game (best FF and JRPG ever in my opinion) you want to see it with better graphics, and to be given an excuse to play it again).
But right now, like the PS2 when it launched, all it has to go on is the hype. Well....I guess it is better than the PS2 launch. The 3DS at least has Kid Icarus.
