So you can count me among the folks having problems with the phone. My SIM card is repeatedly not recognized (even after swapping for a new one). I also lose signal by holding the phone "wrong" (a.k.a. the standard way) I'm on the phone with tech support now.

Hopefully they do me right as the device is amazing, but these problems are ridiculous...

Well, according to Apple the phone needs to be replaced, which I won't be able to do until they are back in stock :( I guess there's not much they can do about selling out already (except for upping production and/or waiting longer to release the phone), but it sucks that I'll have to wait a week or so to get a replacement. The temporary fix is to reboot the phone as needed, but that's not a great solution. They are still working on the widespread signal loss problem...

It really says something about the device itself that I am wiling to put up with this B.S. instead of just returning it and getting another phone. I really do like the hardware and software far more than any other phone I've used or seen (I'm a long time PDA/Smartphone user), and I don't really want to go back to another phone. Hopefully they find some way to make it up to their customers for these pretty significant problems.

Sucks about all the people having trouble making phone calls on their phones. I really can not believe that Steve Jobs told people to just not hold it that way. That doesn't seem like good PR to me.

Glad to hear you will be getting a new phone dude.

I've seen worse. When Red Alert 3 shipped with 1 key missing from the serial key EA told people to just try them all 1 by 1.

Besides the pretentious iphone owners (yes we all know they exist :P) will love the fact that they are the only ones who hold their phone in a special way.

I haven't had any problems here. We do have a considerably more robust network, and the iPhone isn't confined to one provider like it is in the states. Even if I press my hands hard against all the black bands, I still get at least 2 or 3 bars.

The iPhone software (much like OS X) is the star of the show as always. A lot of phones are better on paper than the iPhone, but they just don't work as well. They're not even in the same league - usability wise, as the iPhone. The Android OS is working well towards being a competitor but having used the OS, it's still fairly obscure to me. I preferred the Palm Pre's software, but that phone was ugly as all hell. We should be seeing the best bits of the Pre's software (superior notifications, better task switching) incorporated into the next IOS revision anyway, since Apple stole some of the talent that worked on the it.

Yeah, Android 2.2 comes out next month which I am looking forward to. You guys are lucky that you are not stuck with AT&T over there. I think I read though that there may be an iphone/Verizon partnership next year.

I got mine on launch day and as my first smartphone purchased I'm amazed. The screen is amazing. I have had no dropped calls on AT&T network so far and it is very fast. The software is very simple and easy to use. :D

Read something about when holding phone in normal comfortable position the antennae gets covered.
To make a call in a low bar area you hold it while not covering the sides, don't let that phone fall-FAIL.

I don't see what the fuss is about that. Even if I put my hands over the black strips, I still get the same reception. Even during a phone call. This was indoors too. I usually get much better reception outside of this house. In the garden I was getting full 5 bars. In the house I get around 2 or 3 bars. All the phones do it though. It's just something to do with how this house was built.

I think if in a low bar area might be an issue. Agree, other phones have a similar problem, just that the iPhone is in the limelight right now and with all the new subscribers clogging up the system.
