Nintendo sucks at coming up with titles? At least they aren't naming sequels the same thing as the original for no good reason.

I agree with that (ie: Rocky 1-5 and then Rocky Balboa? Stupid). Everything should be numbered in my opinion and maybe have a sub title ala DKC 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. They could have just called this one DKC 4: Donkey Kong Returns or something of that nature, it's just a bad move on their part. But all this squabble (That I know I started) is pointless because this game is going to be great! It's just unfortunate that Nintendo doesn't stay consistent with the titles of their games.

pepharytheworm wrote:I have noticed if its on the same console Nintendo might go by numbers if the games are similiar, but on other consoles they change the name, and start the numbers over.
examples:
Super Mario Bros., 2 and 3 - NES
Super Mario World and Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island - SNES
Super Maro 64 - N64
Super Mario Sunshine - GCN
Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 - Wii

Donkey Kong, Junior, and 3 - NES and tons of other systems
Donkey Kong Country, 2: Diddy Kongs Quest, and 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble - SNES
Donkey Kong 64 - N64
Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat - GCN
Donkey Kong Country Returns - Wii

It seems Nintendo doesn't do numbering if the series moves to a new console, probably so that people new to the games don't feel like the are playing something old, before their time, or are missing out on something if they didn't play the first ones.
On handhelds it seems cross numbering doesn't matter as much. Wario land series comes to mind. Is Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 or Wario Land VB considered Wario Land 1?

Cool that you pointed that out. That's very interesting and probably true. But either way, I'll always prefer numbering titles.

The reason for dropping numbers is to get customers that haven't been following the series.

A year or so ago, Magic: The Gathering changed the naming of their core sets from Nth edition to using years, just like sports video games (and apparently car models) have been doing for the same reason.

Ivo.

Yeah, but they released Magic 2010 (or Magic '10) as the core set after Magic 10th edition. Just to keep confusion low.

I would have liked if they called it Donkey Kong Country 4 as well, or something like DCK4: Donkey Kong County Returns or something to that nature. What are they gonna name the sequel 3 systems down the line? DCK Returns Again (insert name of system.)

I complained on here that I did not like the name of New Super Mario Bros Wii for the same reason and took a bit of flak for it. I just wish they at least didnt include New in the name, because in 5 years it wont be new.

Metroid Prime 1 and 2 - Gamecube
Metroid Prime 3 - Wii

The Mario Party series, need I say more?

But back on topic, thanks for the article above. I like the fact that there isn't going to be any water levels, which I think is great. I couldn't stand the water levels in the original.

The thing is Metroid Prime is marketed towards a different audience. It's based a lot around story, so you probably should play the predecessors first. Mario is aimed more for people just to pick up and play and isn't based around much of a story.

The title of Mario Party tends to show that it's just a party game and there isn't really a story. So yea.

Damn I liked the water levels. I'm also kind of disappointed that the tag team aspect is gone. Although DK kind of became the character you didn't want to use 90% of the time in the original, since diddy was faster and jumped further and higher.

And then in the following games those people become Diddy and Kiddy. That's the one thing I didn't like about the original games, one character's usefulness outstripped the other's 9 times out of 10.
