You guys do realize GeoHot is the reason for this, right? This is clearly a cause and effect deal.
How much money does Sony make on PS3 sales? A big fat nothing. The only way they make money is through software sales. Do you REALLY, REALLY expect them to just sit back and let the PS3 suffer the same fate as the PSP?
Good news for pirates always ends up being bad news for legitimate users. Just look at how Nintendo started bricking Wiis, and how Microsoft no longer allows for third-party memory devices - the big difference here being that disabling OtherOS doesn't mean your getting money taken out of your wallet.
It's certainly not good that Sony had to resort to this, but I can't think of an alternative, honestly. You want to avoid people stealing the one and only source of profit you have, it's better to kill it as soon as possible.
It's not like Sony WANTED to kill a feature just for the lulz. Get a f***ing grip. This is all for the sake of protecting the bottom line - a line so many are willing to destroy for the sake of getting some free games.
GeoHot should have waited until the PS3 was at the point where the PS2 is currently. It's not good for the industry for every system to be a hot bed of piracy.

Re: Sony removing OtherOS feature in 3.21 PS3 update
Nobody forced Sony to use very expensive components in their PS3. Nintendo have done very well for themselves by using cheap components. That's not the point though.the7k wrote:You guys do realize GeoHot is the reason for this, right? This is clearly a cause and effect deal.

I'm not saying Sony are pulling OtherOS for lulz, or whatever, I have a perfect grip on reality, thank you very much. I know that it's a cause and effect thing. I know that they are removing it for security issues. As I've stated all along.
The problem here is that they've completely removed the feature because it may lead to piracy in the long run. Rather than patching the vulnerability in software they've removed the feature altogether. It doesn't matter whether the feature allows you to install Linux, watch movies over a network, play PS2 games, watch TV, browse the internet, look at photos. It matters even less that 'only a minority uses it'. The simple fact that they've removed an entire feature because it may lead to piracy is very very worrying. It means that given the chance, Sony will remove further features because it may lead to piracy. It's only a matter of time before somebody finds an exploit in another area of the PS3, what are Sony going to do? Remove the feature.
Can't you see that it sets an ugly precedent where a company can do whatever they like with your hardware, remove features that you have paid for as they see fit because it protects their bottom line. Well, you know what Sony, your bottom line depends on us. The consumer, and pulling this kind of shit alienates your customers and we will walk away from you and take our money elsewhere.

I think people have stated several times why they are upset about it. Because it is a feature that they paid for and now will not have access to. That is like Sony stealing from them.
Think about it like this. My hand can grab things, but can also be used for masturbation. It wasn't created to do that though. If all of a sudden i couldnt do that anymore, it wouldn't matter because i have billions of other things that can still do it for me.
Now i have the ps3. It can emulate stuff. But who seriously bought if for this? No one. Thats who. People just want to complain. Everyone loves complaining. If otherOS is taken away. You can do the same ol shit that otherOS did, on something else. And still use teh ps3 for what it was made for.

I use blu-ray and a good portion of the world does now too. It's been four years since the PS3, Blu-Ray and debuted and with HDTV's in 85% of American homes, 20+ million PS3's sold, Blu-Ray players hitting the sub $100 mark this year and the blu-rays themselves on average now $10-$30 depending on the title and amount of content (IE regular or special editions) I can confidently say that while not as prolific as DVD Blu-Ray has at least a good 20-30% of the raw market and is only going to be gaining on DVD's over time.tahoe2 wrote:Have you forgotten about 1/100 of the world uses blue ray so no one gives a sh*t.GSZX1337 wrote:Have you forgotten that for about 3 years the PS3 was the lowest costing Blu-Ray player?tahoe2 wrote:Everyone just uses the ps3 to play some ballin gaymes. You don't seem to understand, yes the majority buys the PS3 to play games, but the true gamers that stood in line and dropped over $500 on a console wanted all those extra features as they were actually something that made their purchase worthwhile and special when compared to the sizable bandwagon of jerkfaces that jumped on when the cheap slims came out.tahoe2 wrote:Octopod wrote:tahoe2 wrote:I'm still convinced it's an april fools joke.

EDIT: For erxample, did you know that the 20GB and 60GB PS3's can play super audio CD's? Super audio CD info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Audio_CD
Most people don't, and most people wouldn't care to use it, but if you owned a library of expensive SACD's and had a nice sound system wouldn't you enjoy the ability to have an extremely cheap yet very very nice SACD player? Most SACD players cost in the neighborhood of $400-$800, compared to that the PS3's $500 was a steal when considering all of the features from when it first came out!

So, you're saying that Sony is setting a dangerous precedent? I guess the actions taken by Microsoft and Nintendo to curb piracy were isolated incidents.Niode wrote: Can't you see that it sets an ugly precedent where a company can do whatever they like with your hardware, remove features that you have paid for as they see fit because it protects their bottom line. Hell, even Sega tried to take out features when they realized way too late that the ability to play music CDs led to easier-than-hell piracy on the Dreamcast. How'd they solve it? By getting rid of the ability to play music CDs altogether. If the Dreamcast was made in this era of firmware updates, I'm sure they'd do the same thing.

No, Sega removed the error in the system which allowed the DC to play burnt CD's. Regular pressed retail CD's/GD-ROM's play just fine in any and all Dreamcast systems.the7k wrote:So, you're saying that Sony is setting a dangerous precedent?
