Nintendo 3DS officially announced
Re: Nintendo 3DS officially announced
By saying you want your handhelds to be the same with only incremental hardware power you sound like the old guard.. Whilst the touch screen hasn't really set the world of gaming on fire it is a step in the right direction, and I wish I could have said the same for the Wii but the waggling has been mostly used as an excuse to churn out crap. Change isn't always good but remains essential nonetheless.

Re: Nintendo 3DS officially announced
We're going to know quite a fair bit about it by June it seems: http://kotaku.com/5500611/nintendo-3ds- ... le-in-june
Pretty cool.
Pretty cool.
I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes.
Re: Nintendo 3DS officially announced
Found a pic of the XL showing size comparison. Now imagine handheld rotated 90 degrees, one eye per screen.
Maybe the 3D version with the split screens moved closer, as "Limewater" pointed out could be a stereogram image?

Kinda like the old stereoscopic photos taken to a new level? A very old concept re-invented and made new again?

Re: Nintendo 3DS officially announced
I very much doubt it's going to be a stereogram. Have you ever tried looking at a stereogram for longer than a couple of minutes at a time? It's bound to cause headaches.
If it's going to do 2D+depth the only way that I can think it being able to achieve this is through a parallax barrier. Is there any other proven consumer technology that works without glasses?

I don't think it will be stereographic, that HAS to be very tiring on the eyes - not to mention that I don't think they can make easy to get into the 3D mode AND also to have the player stay in "3-d" cross-eyed mode during gameplay!
I really hope that's not the idea. I think Niode's guess is much more reasonable and realistic.
Ivo.

Agree, stereoscopic would make my eyes all buggy.Niode wrote:I very much doubt it's going to be a stereogram. Have you ever tried looking at a stereogram for longer than a couple of minutes at a time? It's bound to cause headaches.

Wouldn't want to drive or operate heavy machinery after playing a game, even for a little while.
Plus the older stereoscopic concept had to separate each eye to each screen to achieve the 3D effect.
I watched Terminator 2 live Universal Studios show years ago. Wore special slightly (not Red/Blue) tinted glasses.
The 3D effect on the screen behind the live actors really came alive, stuff would really jump at you.
There were PS1 CD Jewel cases with front ridges that would trick your eyes. Not 3D though.
Title page of game booklet with ridged jewel of Crash and Shipwreckers comes to mind.
It'll be interesting to see what Nintendo has in mind, especially if its "Eyeglass free".
A ridged touch screen or dual layer DVD concept, except for the eyes to focus?
The older stereoscopic concept.
One eye to slight different perspective photo.

I never even thought any company that is involved in the true video game market would attempt to take on the iPhone. Completely absurd and annoying. The iPhone is not a gaming machine. It is a phone with the capability to run applications and games to pass time or allow limited productivity in the absence of a real machine designed for those things. Like if there is not a computer around, I can send an email on my iPhone in a pinch. If I forgot my DS, I can play some crappy iPhone game to pass the time. I have played a lot of iPhone games and they have not compared in anyway (in terms of controls, graphics, etc) to a dedicated handheld system. I have the 2nd gen iPhone so maybe leaps and bounds have been made between the 2nd and 3rd gen that I am not aware of. All this being said, I am not mad at my iPhone because I don't expect my iPhone to compare to a DS or PSP or anything else. Does this mean there will be an app store for the DS2 with 100s of flashlight, fart machine, and other throwaway programs that cost 9.99 each?
This is ignorant drivel if I've ever heard it.

I'd take almost any of those games over just about anything on the DS or PSP.
If physical d-pads and buttons are your biggest issue, you're missing the point. If you want physical buttons, play a PS3, the iPhone is for new games that weren't possible before or new takes on genres.

wait, we're how many pages in and no one has correctly identified how the 3D effects work yet?CRTGAMER wrote:Agree, stereoscopic would make my eyes all buggy.Niode wrote:I very much doubt it's going to be a stereogram. hi, it's called accelerometers.
WordFu on the iPhone did it a year ago, as did this app: (about 1 minute in he demonstrates it)
The system monitors the angle and that translates into a repositioning of the 3D elements. It's actually a really simple thing to do, it's really just a more advanced variation of parallax scrolling or joystick based camera control, I don't know why they haven't done it with the Wii yet. Oh wait, that's right, because the Wii's accelerometers are a joke.
Re: DS2 Details Unveiled at GDC 2010
The iPhone sucks for gaming. I have it and I only play baseball now, but I have tried many many games and have never been satisfied. Everything lags or skips or the controls are just not responsive enough. This is fine, however, because I rely on the phone, mainly, as a phone. It is fun to have around in a pinch, but if I want portable gaming I use a portable gaming machine. If that machine only worked as well as my iPhone and did not have the features of a phone I would be pissed. If it worked as well as my iPhone and did have the features of a phone I would not get it because I have an iPhone. If it is far superior to the iPhone, even if utilizing the same mechanics, then great. But it can not be sold on the idea that it is like an iPhone, which is what I hear it being compared to the most. Comparing the two really does not make the new handheld sound impressive in any way to me because I am aware of the weaknesses of the iPhone and imagine playing games that I love like Zelda and Mario on an iPhone to be annoying as hell - unless they have graphical representations of a D-pad and buttons on the touch screen like many iPhone games do. It reminds me of the other thread talking about the new PS3 Move. It's something new that is kind of like something old so all anyone can think about is the something old. Many people are skeptical of the Move because of its similarities to the Wiimote. Many people, including me, are skeptical of these new systems utilizing iPhone-like mechanics because of the similarities to the iPhone.17DaysOlderThanNES wrote:vash23n wrote:Haha!Yesterday I bought a sandwich at the Moscone Center and it had an accelerometer in it.

I bet/hope there is a limited edition version of the 3DS that looks like a virtual boy
(much like an NES edition gameboy Advance)
Hey, I've been right so far
