So Sony didn't fix it after all, they simply let the date role on and the PS3 is fixed. What a surprise, I posted about this on a friends status on facebook, I said that they wouldn't do anything about it and simply let the date role and it fix itself (if it was a date issue). What a surprise. So have Sony fixed this error, is this going to rear it's ugly head next year? God help us in 2012...

It probably won't happen next year, as they have already had 2009 pass uneventfully (they are both odd numbered years). The next earliest this might happen again is 2012. Also, they may still be working on a fix, because really, it would be easier patch in a fix after the consoles rolled over again rather then try and get a patch through to people when the consoles were not letting people access PSN.

Would it really have been worth it to develop a patch for an issue that would automatically resolve itself in a day? I'd like to see the code that caused it, but I doubt it will happen next year, as it hasn't happened on any other february 28th. Plus, I'm positive they won't make the mistake of not fixing some trivial clock error and have it happen again and get so much bad press again.

Well, that's the thing. It definitely seems like Sony just let the clock roll on to see if it fixed it. Seems like they took the easy road, rather than issuing a fix straight away they just let it fix itself. I don't think it's very fair to expect users to not use their PS3s on 1 day of the year every couple of years really? It definitely looks bad on Sony's part. Hopefully it will get fixed permanently, honestly though, judging on Sony's passed action on this type of problem (PS3 YLOD, PS2 DRE) they'll just ignore it and do absolutely fuck all, like they always do.

I know the whole issue here was the internal clock but through the course of this I learned games are dependent on the PSN to even play. What happens when Sony decides to shut down PSN support for the PS3 one day. Does this mean I can't play them? Or is there something I am missing here?

Games you downloaded from PSN will most probably become irredeemable the moment Sony shuts down their PSN servers. If they're feeling "generous" they can add BC to their next iteration of the Playstation Network but that's highly unlikely. The scenario I expect is that they'll sustain PSN long enough that most people won't care when it shuts down. As for games you bought in disc form, as long as the firmware supports them you won't need online authentication as is the case with most PC games coming out nowadays.

I'm pretty sure that, now that they've seen there is a problem, it'll be fixed with a soon-to-be-released firmware update. I'd think it's a pretty easy fix.

As for fixing PS3 YLOD or PS2 DRE... what could they do, exactly, that would fix those problems on a wide scale? "Here's a firmware update! That'll fix your PS2 laser right up!"

At least this problem fixed itself. I wonder if any other console's reliability problems will fix themselves without action taken by the manufacturer?

It just seems like this is all a huge overreaction to something that amounts to not being able to play a majority of the PS3 library for 24 hours. I can understand it being a huge inconvenience for those who have a PS3 Fat and ONLY a PS3 Fat - but seriously, who here - especially on this forum - have ONLY a PS3 Fat?

If you download something from the PSN, and unplug your console from the internet (no more PSN!) it will still work. This issue didn't have anything to do with the PSN (if it did, it wouldn't have been as big of a deal - live goes down very occasionally as well). The problem had something to do with how the console handles leap years. So in 10 years, when there is no PSN, don't worry about losing stuff, you will still be able to play it.

videogameexperiment was asking whether PSN will be there indefinitely (that's what I gathered anyway) and the answer is of course no. If his downloaded games got deleted somehow it would be pretty impossible to get them back if whatever Sony network at such a moment did not support the PS3 the way it does now. I don't want to steer the thread into a DRM debate but everyone is effectively renting their games as long as console network operators allow them to, unless they come in disc format, and even that will most likely change come 8th generation of consoles. I think someone ought to start a topic to discuss Ubisoft's crazy DRM plans.
