Do you think Sony will ever pull ahead this generation?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Most DVDs can hold about 5GBs. Blu-Rays can hold 50GBs. Now, imagine if you bought The Simpsons Season 1 and 2 on Blu-Ray, and instead of it spanning 8 discs like it does now, all those episodes were on one Blu-Ray disc?

Better for the consumer? Yes - although that depends on how greedy the people making it are. They could easily charge $35 for something that on DVD, could cost $50-100. Also, it's going to take up a lot less space on shelves.

Better for the company? Yes - One Blu-Ray is a lot cheaper to make than 6-10 DVDs. They'll also save on packaging costs.

Too bad no one seems to think the way I do about this sort of thing.
This right here is the big advantage to Blu ray over DVD for your average consumer. If they did this (and got rid of that god damn goofy blue packaging they insist on using right now that looks bad on its own and hideous next to regular DVDs) I would start stocking up on Blu ray copies of TV shows.

I might be alone on this, but I actually like the Blu-Ray packaging. It's why I've been converting my PS3 covers to Blu-Ray style (that, and it saves space). Just need to find a supplier who doesn't charge out the ass for shipping.

Thanks - I actually knew about this site, but I was told they charge to much for shipping. I see whoever said that was a liar now. =P

Anyway, we're getting off track here, aren't we?

What do you think it would take for Sony to actually appeal to all the people who haven't made a decision yet? (And please, no 'drop the price' or 'bring BC back' - its been said far too often, and its just too easy to say.)

I personally think they're doing a good job, at least based on their E3 Presser. They seem to be targeting long-time gamers, which it seems Nintendo is now realizing they should be targeting as well. To me, it seems foolish for a company other than Nintendo to target the 'Blue Ocean' - Nintendo has a death grip on that audience, and trying to take it away from Nintendo seems like an exercise in futility.

I'd personally just like to see more variety in online games from them (too many FPSs), and a stronger focus on bringing their Japanese hits (like mother-fucking Yakuza 3 and Yakuza Kenzan) to America.

Also sales have picked up for sony in japan, in the last couple of months. now they are kind of low again, but with FF13 at the end of the year, they'll skyrocket

You better thank God, I pay $100+ for a 4mb/s DSL with 12GB LIMIT!!!
25 GB is luxury to me!

On the other topic, I do not see Blu-ray having any image difference, it just looks like a really clear DVD. I can't justify an HDTV after I saw gears of war working at my friend's house.

I think jump to DVD was essential. Where I am VHS sucked, like really sucked the picture is damn ugly and jittery due to pirating(from rental stores) . DVD was like cinema experience. A couple years ago I bought a '98 WCW VHS and it was so clear I think it can be mistaken for a DVD, I didn't even know VHS can be that clear!

There is no need for a Blu-ray jump as I see it, the quality jump is very minimal for most people. Though it is nice to have 5 seasons of anything on 1 CD.

I think the main reason Blue-Ray is not useful is that we don't need more than 10 GB for any kind of movie no matter how much quality you pump in it. If it's not a movie then you can use several discs and we are all set.

Actually, most movies are anywhere from 100-250GBs when they are shot, and that's just the movie - it's not counting extra features, language dubs, etc. If anything, Blu-Ray isn't good enough - there is still a ton of audio and video information that is compressed, just not nearly as much as with a DVD.

Being satisfied with what is out now may be good for your wallet, but it sure as shit ain't good for progress. If I had a Blu-Ray Burner, I could back up my entire hard-drive on one disc. I dunno about you, but I think that's pretty damn useful.

You have a 50 gigabyte harddrive??

Between all my drives, I have over a terabyte now. No amount of physical backup is ever going to be practical.
Comics, RPG's, miniatures, and now retrogaming? I guess its time to learn to go without eating...

My main hard drive is 50GBs - I have plenty of external hard drives that are much larger, but I'm not very worried about having to reformat them in the case of a virus attack or what have you.
