Sega or Nintendo?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

I'm a fan of both, probably more so Nintendo, but I really don't get this whole love affair with Sega. I'm a huge Genesis fan, but everything after was a failure, whereas Nintendo hasn't gone anywhere and is currently winning the current console war.

Failure how? Sure in sales numbers. But in inovation and a good time overall. Sega has done wonders on all their consoles. Taking risks and innovating was what made them special. Even the Master System was the console of choice in the PAL regions and each of their consoles have been popular at least in one region. Each of their systems has had moderate sales sucess at least (minus the add-ons, but even then they had acceptable sales).

I mean, the SMS would probably be the only failure inovation wise. It still had its ups though, like Alex Kid

Then the Genesis had games like Sonic, The Ooze, Comix Zone etc.

Saturn had NiGHTS, Panzer Dragoon series, Guardian Heroes, Virtua Fighter

Dreamcast had REZ, Jet Grind Radio, Skies of Arcadia, Space Channel 5, Toy Commander

I guess I'm just curious what you mean by failure. Sure they didn't have great sales, but if you take that as a measure of sucess then you are probably a blind fanboy.

I can't deny the impact Nintendo had especially in the 80's but Sega was the ultimate gaming company in my opinion. Just ruined by some poor management choices is all.

Jeez, you want to talk about being a blind fanboy?

By failure, yes I mean sales. If no buys it then it's failure. This is a business, not lets cater to a niche group. I don't care how many of your favorite games were on that system, if it was one of the reasons why the company dosen't produce consoles anymore, then yes it's a failure. Out of all those Saturn games you metioned, one appealed to me and I'm a gamer, so where does that leave the general public?

You want to talk about taking risks and being innovative? What is the Wii? Heck, Microsort and Sony are both trying to copy and come out with their own motion controls.

Honestly, I really don't want to go on and on, back and forth on what's better. Obviously each person has their own favorites, but I think it's pretty clear which company failed and which is still going. Thats not fanboy talk because I wish Sega was still making consoles, but clearly they weren't cut out for it.

Nintendo wins.

Growing up, as the systems came out, I had:

NES
Gameboy
SNES

Master System
Genesis
Game Gear
Sega CD

and the truth is that while the Sega systems may have been more powerful or sleek, it's all the Nintendo GAMES that I remember and love the most.

We call sega innovative, cause it was the first console maker to really push online (but it was too early :( ) cause it came out with peripheral games YEARS before it became a fashion, and it even tried crazy stuff, like the memory of the dreamcast being a gameboy

And also, this one is very important for me, it kept making new franchises with every generation of console it made.

I love nintendo. I have 3 gameboys (brick, color, advance) 2 DS (phat, lite) a gamecube and now a Wii (which I love), but their only new franchise for the past 3 generations, is freaking pikmin, which is not even a fun game (I find it boring).

Although they redeemed themselfs a bit in my eyes, with Wii Sports, which I thought was great, a lot of people hate their new casual games

Um, I'm not trying to add kindle to the fire here, but are sales figures REALLY a logical gauge by which to measure the quality of a work of art? I say that the greater artist is the one who took more risks and actively attempted to innovate in their medium of art regardless of circumstance, not the one who had greater sales figures. I mean, is the person who wrote the Twilight books really a better author than Franz Kafka or Allen Ginsberg just because the books sold better? I think if you're going to try and justify a preference between the two, it should be on the basis of which company's games and motives you enjoyed more as opposed to which one faired better on the mass-marketplace.

I personally favor Sega because of their generally more aggressive gameplay and, as I mentioned, the highly artistic and innovative motives they employed when creating video games; their games feel more inspired to me, and I connect with them on a more personal level than the predominantly iconic nature which Nintendo employs.

If we're juding the games as pieces of art, then not much can beat:

Rethink that ZeroAX. Three generations would mean since the N64. So Mario Sports Titles (apart from Tennis), 1080 Snowboarding, Custom Robo, Super Smash Brothers series, Mario Party series, Warioware series, and the Pokemon phenomenon...

I'll give you custom robo and smash bros. The rest have been either put on the side (1080) or been milked to the ground, and have lost every taste of being new (mario party, and pokemon mostly)

I left out many on purpose - and I try to forget Wave Race.

And even though you do not like them, they are new franchises.

I don't think he was calling Sega a failure based on artistic merit, but simply as a business. Sega got out of the console business because it was losing them all kinds of money. That's the definition of failure.
