Hey everybody has an opinion, I find Holabacks threads to be entertaining at the least anyway.

I think the point is that, even though there is a "whatever" forum, and even though everyone has the right to their opinion, certain topics can be offensive or just annoying. For instance, I am sure that an Asian guy who happens to have an Asian girlfriend would feel a little ticked off about that post. Topics like that, though not meant to be malicious, are a good way to drag people into a heated argument that never gets resolved and just annoys everyone involved or looking on from the outside. Debate is fun over video games, but attacking personal stuff, whether it's intended or not, is a good way to turn people away and ruin a forum.

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind this guy at all, I think that particular post just wasn't worded well. It shows how a bad post or 2 can quickly make a bad impression. It happens to all of us.

Make an off topic forum. Seriously.

This.

It's annoying when members jump into a non-gaming thread in the Whatever forum and complain that "hey this is supposed to be about games!" Moz I know you mentioned your OCD concerns, but I don't know that creating a new Non Gaming/Off-Topic forum would require mods to go back and move the threads that have been dead for a while. You could just move everything that is OT in the Whatever forum from the last month and if someone resurrects an older OT post, only then move it to the new OT forum.

Also, I would argue very strongly against any kind of censorship based on content. If someone makes an offensive post/comment, it is the community's responsibility to call them out. Holaback's threads are ridiculous, but knowing his posting history lets me figure out if/how I want to engage him in discussion. If someone starts spewing racism, sexism, etc. in their post, I have the responsibility as a community member to call them on it. They are ultimately damaging their own reputation, not that of the boards.

It shouldn't be up to the mods to decide whether or not a topic is fair game or off limits. In my view, mods should merge threads, move threads, delete spam, and do general management of the forums - not dictate content.

I've said this before, but it's appropriate here... my biggest pet pieve on this forum is this:

Poster1: Hi, can anybody explain to me how to get the broadband working on my Gamecube? Thanks!

Poster2: Why would you want to? Just get a Wii.

I see these kind of unhelpful posts all the time, and they really bug me.
