Previous generations cartoonish games were the norm. When Microsoft and Sony veered off into gritty and realistic art, Nintendo mostly stayed the course. I'm glad they did, personally.Jmustang1968 wrote:Nintendo also released Super Mario Sunshine which sounds like a title for kids and stylized Windwaker to be more cartoonish. I think that piled on the rep.

Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
When the GameCube came out, there was GTA III on the PS2 or a small purple box console with Luigi's Mansion, which came across as being a kiddie game. At least that was my 23 year-old perception at the time.
I eventually picked one up for my sister (Mario Sunshine was at least MARIO) and have one personally now as well. I like the library but remember being pretty underwhelmed with the launch.
This isn't even taking account of the lack of DVD player. That was so big for PS2.

Jeez, that was (ironically) a pretty immature perception to have at 23 years old. That's more the sort of thing I expect from teenagers. No offence
I remember looking at the terrible hardware and graphics of the PS2 (also fairly immature of me) and looking at this and thinking "wow!":

I just remember looking at the price

Oh yeah, that tooZeroAX wrote:I just remember looking at the price
It was £129.99 here in the UK, which was just absolutely crazy at the time.

I'd be curious to know if those shots are from Dolphin or not. They look a bit sharper then I remember the GC looking at the time.

The RE one looks to be the most authentic "capture" from the GC.Stark wrote:I'd be curious to know if those shots are from Dolphin or not. They look a bit sharper then I remember the GC looking at the time.
The Eternal Darkness one looks like a Dolphin shot, it's way too clean.
The Rogue Squadron shot is your typical touched up marketing shot (look at the LucasArts copyright mumbo jumbo on the bottom).

Yeah..... They were only examples.... The Gamecube still looked damn impressive at the time.
Edit: Rogue Leader looks pretty close to that shot, from my memory.

I would say less immature and more so just misinformed. But from a GTA, wrestling, sports standpoint - the PS2 was the place to be.
I loved the N64 too - GCN just didn't grab me out of the gate.

Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
It took me a while to get into the GC, too. Of course, I was behind the curve on everything at that time. My priority has always been RPGs, so if I remember my timeline correctly, the PS2 was the first system I bought. The GC didn't come long after, though. I bought it with Super Mario Sunshine from my local pawn shop, and it's still tickin', although it sees very inconsistent use now, mostly for the Game Boy Player. The Gamecube did play host to the very first game I pre-ordered, the inimitable Wind Waker.
Something else to keep in mind is that, even though the GC enjoyed third-party support, they almost all came in well below the sales for the other two systems. So devs started abandoning ship, and it probably also explains why so many didn't sign up for the Wii, despite it selling like gangbusters. (Never mind the whole "fad" argument, which may or may not have been fair, but it's most certainly a self-fulfilling prophecy if you don't try.)
