Perhaps realizing they can emulate NES and everything else on a Raspberry Pi much more cheaply than a NES Classic.

The systems are now going into this month are showing up in a more regular albeit still small basis at quite a few stores a couple times of week. Nintendo still isn't up to speed yet but appear to be getting more out. 4 a load or something vs 4 in a month or two is a step up.

It can:

It can also look like a SNES, a Genesis, a 2600, or any other console your heart may desire.

My local Target has a bunch of these now. They don't seem to be selling. The big holiday rush is over.

Unless the now in stock and brick seek sites are just locally garbage depending where you are there's none around here.

Maybe if someone wants one you could go buy it and they re-imburse you for your total expenses and a little tip on the side for the effort?

That was a lie some tool started a rumor over somewhere days ago that the media picked up on without even trying to verify a source (as usual.) Nintendo is still making them, apparently in good supply as somewhere in days or weeks(forget date) they'll be dropping a large load of them on the market through various outlets (amazon, etc.)
