My Wii refuses to play SSBM, even though it works on my GC, the cords of which I've lost recently :( .

I play Mario Sunshine on the wii though, and considering it's my only well played GC game, I certainly don't want to have to set of a console just for that one game.
Current Consoles: SNES, GBC, Game Cube, Nintendo DSL, Wii, N64, PS2
Past Consoles: PS1, X-BOX, GBA

FAV Franchises/Games: Sonic The Hedgehog, Lock's Quest, Legend of Zelda, Megaman Battle Network, Mysims, Plok(SNES), Kirby, Ristar, Sly Cooper, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, Smash Bros, Okami, Tekken, Super Mario, Wario Land, Golden Sun, Streets of Rage and Elite Beat Agents.

I can almost guarantee you I could come up with some peripherals that worked on the original GBA but not on the DS. I think I could do the same for GBA and Gameboy/Color. Gameboy Color might slip by, though, but that wasn't a whole lot more than just an upgraded Gameboy either.

It still doesn't make much sense though.

For some consoles, backwards compatibility is a matter of including all or part of the old machine to enable playback. From that standpoint, I'd agree, to a point (I still think it's nice to have, and personally don't mind paying a little extra for it).

The Wii currently doesn't have much of that - as it's basically a faster Gamecube at its core, the software runs natively. Presumably, if the Wii U can use all Wii games and accessories, the hardware is either again similar enough that Gamecube software could run natively -or- Nintendo is already including what it needs for playing games on a CPU/GPU that Gamecube software will run on.

It just seems like something they could include with little or no extra cost.

Having 4 Gamecube controller ports and 2 Gamecube memory card slots would be an extra cost.

Not actually necessary though. Look at playing PSX games on a PS3. It has a virtual memory card system - if you're not trying to use an existing memory card, you don't need anything extra. If you are, then you get their USB memory card adapter and transfer your saves.
Plugging in the old controllers isn't necessary because the Dual Shock 3 includes the same functionality (and more). It does screw over specialty controllers...but not all would work in modern setups anyway (like light guns)

I'd assume that the system will have a port or three to attach other accessories/add ons to. They could just offer a Gamecube port accessory (and make ridiculous margins on it), and possibly offer a "classic" controller in the form of a wireless Gamecube controller to boot.

definitely there was GBA stuff that didn't work right on the DS, but I'm pretty sure that everything GB outside of stuff like big clip on magnifying lenses and shit worked on the GBA.
