Man, I love NES boxes. Pure artwork. No stupid color schemes or logos to get in the way. They look like VHS boxes.

I agree! I always felt like the box art was meant to give you an image of the action, as if you caught them in the act. I always thought that idea was cool to see, even if it wasn't always executed well.

But there were schemes by the companies. Nintendo started with the black pixel boxes, Konami and SNK had the silver sides going on, Capcom had the grid boxes and then the indigo ones.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
My local retro store, Hocus Pocus, closed about 3 years ago. Really missing it today, it's just the kind of day I would have made a run into town to see Tom and his boxes of games- the "good" and "rare" ones were kept in the back. Don't think I ever saw a SNES game priced over $18. For a while, I had planned to seduce and marry his beautiful daughter, and inherit the store...

Sega Genesis (Model 2), Sega CD, Sega 32X, SNES, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Game Boy Family, Phillips CD-i Model 910, NES, Atari 5200, Virtual Boy, Atari Jaguar, Playstations 3-4

But everyone could do what they wanted. You didn't have to have neon-green borders for Xbox, or blue-boarders for PS4, or whatever the system scheme was what I meant.

I know, I was just picking. There was a little bit of a template for stuff though. The "license for play on..." and the quality seal usually appeared in a few standard places. But yeah, not like 16 bit and on when it was more controlled where you generally put the art "here" and the logo "there or there" and everything else was the same as everyone else.

You can still do what you want with PC boxart, for what that's worth.

The early Genesis boxes were like this too. Sega's games had the grid boxes but third parties did whatever they wanted. They really lost some charm when they switched to the red-stripes for everyone scheme.

You are right Dave...those logos do get in the way.
