s.Darko - pretty good movie, but a very bad Donnie Darko sequel.
Tried to watch "Memorial Valley Massacre", but copped out halfway throught.
Recently bought 4 old VHS tapes from Hotline: Batman ('89), Batman Forever (seen it, and really the best of Schumacher's career, albeit a bit too flashy and near cartoony, but then again, I kinda like that), Terminator 2 (haven't seen it from beginning to end yet), and Species (haven't seen it yet).
And not a movie, but... I've got the complete series boxset of "Birds of Prey". Saw the series back in the day, and used to have some TV-rips burned to DVD-R, but chucked them the instant I got the legit thing.
And I've started to record an Ingmar Bergman movie marathon, knowing next to nothing about Bergman's work, except that "The Seventh Seal" is about a man playing chess with Death.
Oh, and on Ovation TV: "Comic Book Confidential" and "Triplets of Belleville", and I've got "Waking Life" and "Crumb" on the DVR.
What was the last movie you've seen?
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
Oh man, since last I posted in this thread, I've watched THX 1138, eXistenZ, and The Day of the Triffids. Of the three, I actually enjoyed Triffids the most. Even if the DVD quality was horrendous, the acting poor, and the plot bizarre, it actually proved to be a pretty effective movie to me. THX 1138 suffered from a lack of feeling...as in, I just felt so despondent to the characters, I had a hard time paying attention.
eXistenZ...eh, as a guy that plays video games, I wasn't a fan of their take on biological gaming, and after a while the obvious sexual overtones actually started getting on my nerves. I like Cronenberg, but this isn't one of my favorites of his that I've seen.

Not off hand, but Diabolik has a selection of foreign DVDs. I wish they had the Australian release of the Ozploitation film "20th Century Oz". They're kinda like Xploited Cinema before they went belly-up.OldSchool_Boy wrote:any1 know a good site based in the US to get new foreign films?
And currently rewatching "Role Models".
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
I just watched A Boy And His Dog. It was...well, all about a partnership between a telepathic dog and a boy who is on a perpetual quest to get laid in the post-nuclear apocalyptic holocaust created after World War IV. I'm not kidding. It was absolutely bizarre, and I thought it was absolutely great. Really made me want to play more Fallout...

Just watched Slumdog Millionaire.
Was a little hard for me to follow at first, but it ended up being pretty cool and very well-made. Definately worth a rental if you haven't seen it .

Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
I just watched The Thing From Another World. I had heard it was good, especially for all the black and white horror/sci-fi that came out of that era, but I wasn't expecting it to be that good. Sure, the film's pretty dated in a lot of ways, and it really wasn't that scary, but the personalities of the individuals, the warring minds of the scientist vs. soldier, the dialogue, and some of the cinematography really got me invested in the story. Instead of the 1980s cellular being, the creature is a plant-like superman who feeds on animal blood. The actor they got for him was perfect, emphasizing his aggressiveness even when standing still. And the crew had a great means of emphasizing his size and strength by repeatedly framing him as he smashes open doors, even ripping through a door frame at one point. Also, the reveal of the creature? Absolutely amazing and perfectly timed. There were quite a few times where I found myself saying "Oh shit!" when the creature appeared.
Seriously, of all the 1950s B-horror/sci-fi films, this is one of the best. Granted it's up against stuff like THEM, but it's really good.

Star Trek
Very impressive, especially since I'm a fan. Easily the best of the lot.

Crank:High Voltage:
Not in the same league at the first (which I seriously love). This one is more misanthropic, goofier, and not nearly as tight and together. Also, I thought the ending was pretty bad, though the first hour did have a lot of laughs. Also, while the first film actually had a lot going on thematically, this one appears, at least on first viewing, to have no real subtext.
Star Trek:
Not bad. There are some completely stupid plot points that I think have been pointed out by some web comics, but overall I thought it was good.
Body of Evidence:
A sexual thriller from the early nineties starring Madonna and William DaFoe. It is similar to and overshadowed by Basic Instinct, but this one actually holds up a lot better to the passage of time.
Taken:
I found it enjoyable, as I tend to enjoy Luc Besson films. The daughter in this one had virtually no redeeming qualities, though. The film is a bit clumsy in setting up the family relationship at the beginning, and there are several corny moments, and they probably should have just left the bit about the pop singer out entirely, but overall it's not bad.
Regarding eXistenZ:
I've seen it twice and enjoyed it both times. I was willing to suspend my disbelief when it came to the film's use of gaming, since it seemed to mostly just be an excuse to have a reality-bending film.
