I put two hours into Zwei: The Ilvard Insurrection tonight, and had a lot of fun. This is some damn good action-RPG'n as only Falcom can make. The localization in Zwei is fantastic by the way, XSEED is in top form here. I really hope Zwei doesn't get ignored by western RPG gamers, like other quality Falcom titles have, such as Xanadu Next, Nayuta: Endless Trails and Brandish: The Dark Revenant. Believe it or not Falcom does make high quality action-RPGs that aren't always named Ys. I'm definitely going full throttle on Zwei in the coming nights ahead.

Also now I know why XSEED released Zwei: The Ilvard Insurrection on Halloween. One of the two main protagonists is an (adorable) vampire.

Divinity Original Sin on PS4. I'm almost done with the first big area and i'm enjoying the game but the RNG sure does sometimes cause me to lose my temper. At least you can save during battles but it's still very much annoying when people keep missing on critical moments.

The latest Retronauts podcast was all about the early SaGa series, which was really cool. The first three GB games sound very fascinating. The claim was that the first game, was the first portable RPG and Square Soft's first million seller, thus is why that Akitoshi Kawazu probably had some prestige and got to continue making games for nobody but himself (Unlimited Saga being the joke, which I've heard Bone and others joke about too). Akitoshi Kawazu laid out the blueprints for the ATB system in the Final Fantasy series from what I understand, but really let wild in FF2 with its completely wacky system. Other than that my only exposure to his games, is The Last Remnant where he was the executive producer and scenario writer... frankly I thought the game was amazing and was pretty bummed nobody cared about it, it's just as cool as FF12 in my book and even better in ways (story).

All in all some fascinating stuff. What's everyones opinions on Kawazu's crazy concepts, the SaGa series, etc? Nothing about half the games sounds user friendly or ideal in any capacity, but they all sound fascinating and worth looking into.

Apparently Romancing SaGa 3 on the SNES is still so complex that it has yet to be fan translated?

And I guess he didn't work on Final Fantasy Legend 3, but that one sounds super cool with time travel and ideas that predate Chrono Trigger by years.

I've been meaning to actually play more SaGa for years. I played a bit of a friend's copy of SaGa Frontier II long ago, and bought Unlimited SaGa when that was released. >_> I'm not entirely sure if I want to play the Game Boy versions of SaGa 1-3, though. The first one was remade for the Wonder Swan Color, and SaGa 2 and 3 were remade for the DS, but I don't know how faithful they are. Also, I have Romancing Saga 1-3 on the SFC, but I have the PS2 version of Romancing Saga, as well. So, yet another dilemma. Always seemed like a very quirky brand, but I also kind of fear them in some ways. (Unlimited SaGa trauma?)

Yeah, they didn't really go into too much depth on the re-releases and ports, but I think they briefly mentioned the DS titles and PS2 remake of one of them are all good.

SaGa Frontier 2 is apparently the most linear game, with two characters. But SaGa Frontier has like 6 characters all with their own scenario and that's always kind of a turn off to me personally. Maybe I'll check out 2 sometime first.

I think they mentioned the guy who directed Legend 3 did Treasures of the Rudras. Which is also a really bizarre game and probably fits the SaGa glove.

Romancing SaGa 3 has a mostly complete translation; it needs an editing pass and I don't think they were able to implement a variable width font for text boxes. I was able to play through the entire game using that translation and I have zero Japanese character knowledge. It's definitely an oddball of a game; aside from the chance based leveling like seen in Final Fantasy II there's a system that gates when quests become eligible based on your HP (a rough gauge of your power). And a quest becoming available can be a reason that you can suddenly enter a new area, so you're never sure if you still have places to go or not. Totally kickass boss music, though.

Xeogred, for Saga 2 & 3, I would play these:

Well, I would. You are allergic to flashcarts / emulation, so maybe not.

Yeah, too lazy and I think getting a flashcart would be like downloading a torrent of a complete rom collection of some system. I'll just look at it and never play anything.

These covers are way cooler:

Youtube literally only has like 2-3 low budget "review" videos of SaGa 2 haha. Barely anything up there for both games outside of the OST's.

It sounds like some of these other games might have the FF2 leveling system? I don't think I want to deal with that ever again.

I'm not sure what you meant, but the PS1 games that you linked, are not the same games that I linked. The DS games I linked are remakes of the GB originals. I would play the DS remakes over the GB originals was my point.

Anyway the Saga series in general is cool. Lots to choose from too.
