I think MGS2 is an ass basket, but I get why some folks love it. It's incredibly subversive and daring, and took some ballsy chances. But behind all its insanity, the actual gameplay doesn't measure up to its predecessor and I found the plot itself to be amateur hour. Truly MGS2 is the most divisive of the series.

Everything I've heard about MGS5 makes it sound like something I'd love, so I'm nabbing a copy of it very soon. I've still got to play MGS4 and Ground Zeroes first though. I'm very leery of MGS4 because it looks like it has a lot more in common with MGS2 than MGS3.

Stripping away the story, and focusing purely on the gameplay, I find MGS2 to be a safe but natural evolution of MGS1's gameplay. Basically all the same stuff, with first-person shooting and analog movement added in. It's sort of like comparing Medal of Honor on PS1 to Medal of Honor Frontline on PS2.

The story, yeah, if you don't love it you'll probably think it's the most retarded thing ever. I remember MGS2 being one of those popular-to-hate games in the few years after release, sort of like Halo 2.

MGS4 is like a weird hybrid between 2 and 3. It has crouchwalking, auto-camo, and it's mostly viable to run through the game shooting everybody like MGS3. At the same time, it's cramped and restricted like MGS2, and it's got an equally bonkers but much less clever story. I can't say I've met anyone who names MGS4 as their favorite MGS game, but it's still a must-play. Think of it as being the Attack of the Clones of the MGS series.

TBH you could play MGSV without playing MGS4 and still understand the story. It's Peace Walker and Ground Zeroes that you really need under your belt first. Ground Zeroes is really cheap and just 3-ish hours long if you only play the main story mission so don't hesitate.

The only thing that can beat a metal gear... is, of course... another metal gear.

Hmm, well I have beaten Peace Walker on PSP, and I do own a copy of 360 Ground Zeroes. I figured that Metal Gear 5 is basically Super Peace Walker, and I'm okay with that if it is.

Dude yeah. The gameplay is the sole reason why I have replayed MGS2 10x more than MGS3. It was one of the last games from that era where I had urges to beat it on every difficulty, collect all the dog tags, find all the Japanese idol girls to take camera shots of, and do everything I could. Don't even get me started on VR Missions, the content there is godly and massive (sucks this was the last one to have it). It's amazing how mechanically the first two MGS's play just like Metal Gear 1-2 as well and share the same radar system. MGS2 was the ultimate evolution of that style. I guess if you're not huge on MGS1 either then this makes more sense, otherwise... I think people can hate MGS2's story shenanigans all they want, but gameplay wise it's incredibly good.

And yeah Phantom Pain pretty much is Super Peace Walker.

Don't let Ground Zeroes fool you either... I went back to that after beating Phantom Pain and yikes, Snake moves like a giant tank haha. All the subtle changes they made were for the best. Phantom Pain controls and plays like a dream.

I find myself loving parts of MGS2 and hating others, but on balance it's a good game. Not MGS3 or the original for my tastes, but good. Actually, I liked MGS4 a lot as well, and that story was just bonkers. But in a good way. :)

MG3:Subsistence was a brilliant experience for me, 10/10 game. I actually plan to replay it via the HD version on PS3 sometime soonish. And me replaying a game of that length is an extremely rare event.

I can definitely get on board with that, I need to get the HD version eventually.

Sadly, the HD version of MGS3 is the most botched of the collection. lol

Nothing dramatic, but there were definitely some graphical errors at really weird times, specifically I remember some weird background issues going on near the end with The Boss kind of ruining the moment. Probably just random occurrences though, but I otherwise had no issues at all with MGS2 or Peace Walker.

At least Capcom knows how to port/remaster stuff. I still think the DMC Collection is probably the best remaster set out there.

Any of you have a take on the 3DS version of MGS3? I'm kind of curious about it at times, but just never had the nerve to bite. Keep in mind the MGS 3D games I've only enjoyed were the first and Peacewalker.
