see, i like exactly one of the games you listed (paper mario, and i dont' like it THAT much). seriously the only N64 game i've ever truly enjoyed or said "i want to sit down and play this" is Super Mario 64. hate hybrid heaven, hate harvest moon, hate mega man 64 (and legends), hate mischief makers, i think jet force gemini is OKAY but that's it. i dunno, i just don't really care for it. not my kind of system.

plus that controller. ugh. at least it's better than the DC controller.

I wouldn't recommend Hybrid Heaven or Mischief Makers first. (I also hate Harvest Moon.) What about Mario Kart 64, Ogre Battle 64, Doom 64, Robotron 64, Bust-a-Move 99, Bust-a-Move 2, Extreme-G, Extreme-G 2, and Diddy Kong's Racing? If you really like Super Mario 64, Donkey Kong 64 and the two Banjo games are close, but not quite there in terms of quality.

I haven't really met anyone (aside from the internet) who even knows what a Saturn is, let alone that it's better than the N64.

Guessing you were much younger then around '94/'95? Most who were into gaming relatively hardcore back then respected the Saturn. The gaming magazines were full of praise for the arcade ports & import exclusives. Now, no in my group of my game playing buds owned one then. we all had N64 & PSX, parents buy their teenagers what their friends already have. I did play the SS (had a family member w/one) & I remember viewing the games at WalMart (after eying them in mags) & wishing my parents would go for me having multiple systems, but that was a no go lol. Was already mowing yards for the games I had.

I was blown away by Loaded or Contra Hard Corp (don't remember which one :) similar styles). Saying no one knows what it is... exaggeration. I see them on crasigslist often. Now, most younger gamers under 20 probably don't. I'll give u that. Also don't forget how well it did in JPN. SS JPN games were released throughout the Dreamcast life cycle.

mario kart is fine, i suppose, but it's not that great single-player. diddy kong racing is irritating to me. i haven't played ogre battle, i like the PS1 version, is this one any different? robotron is on psone, extreme-G is available on other platforms (not the exact game but the sequel, as well as dozens of other, superior games), bust-a-move is on countless other platforms as well.

i dunno. i just don't see very many "must-have" games for me to warrant keeping a console around. i have an emulator on my oXbox and a small handful of games, but i really only end up playing SM64.

i should probably try out sin & punishment. i don't really like bangai-o (DC or N64 vers.)

oh! i just remembered liking Rakuga Kids. that game was pretty awesome.

Interesting that someone brought up DKC, I personally never thought it was one of the best SNES games.

To branch it with a previous topic, DKC to me is like the Uncharted of platformers. It seems to be a game that is more based around production, art and being more expansive than other platformers.

Most people usually praise DKC for its graphics, sound and exploration (realistically, there is nothing to explore because none of the puzzle pieces are really worth getting in the end). Its actual physics don't feel very good to me. I feel like in Donkey Kong your character just jumps too high but not far enough, like a bad football punt. He feels very restricted in the air, and I don't see why they would do that since the stages don't really exploit that. There's really nothing great about it's mechanics and the stage design is cool in an aesthetic way, but most of the stages don't really test you that well.

With that being said, I can kind of chain this into the nostalgia topic. I played Donkey Kong Country Returns a few months after it had come out at a friends house (we played quite a few sessions), and it was probably the best Wii game I had played (after some reflecting RE4 is probably the best). I was quite shocked at how different it handled, it was more loose and fluid, and the stage design was more challenging. DKCR seemed to focus on actual precision platforming which is what I probably enjoy the most when it comes to platform games. DKCR has amazing reviews, but I rarely see anyone call it the best Wii game (but I have seen plenty of people call DKC the best SNES games), and it's never mentioned as the best DKC game (DKC2 or 1 usually get that honor).

It's almost like people forgot it, I remember I said this on another message board once and a few people said that people were nit picky because you didn't fight the kremlins in them.

I haven't played the older DKC's in along time though.

Also, the best n64 game is WWF No Mercy 8)

Mario Kart 64: Agreed.
Diddy Kong Racing: Really? Weird. :/
Ogre Battle 64: It's very different from the PS1 version. They're entirely different games, and Ogre Battle 64 is closer to the SNES game and much superior than both.
Robotron 64: The PS1 version is zoomed in and inferior.
Extreme-G/Extreme-G 2 are still good, in my opinion. I wouldn't give up on SFII just because I thought SFIII was better.

It's certainly not my most played system but you should at least try out the ROM for Ogre Battle 64 if you liked the SNES one.

Ogre Battle 64 is the best Ogre Battle game, the best 5th-gen RPG, and one of the best games of all time. It rules!

Talk about your unpopular opinion! I thought I was alone on this one, so I'm glad to see someone else share this rather unpopular opinion.

Hey, that's one of the biggest games I get nostalgic over! I only ever owned like 6 other SNES games though. So my SNES memories are pretty much limited to only DKC, SMW, and Pilotwings.

I was 6 at the time yeah. Got my PS1 in 97 I guess. Everyone else I knew from school had N64's and or PlayStations. Never really had game magazines until 2000 I guess.

I do distinctly remember going to Toys R' Us to pick out a new game and seeing the saturn section. Had no idea what the heck that was though. It was also the same day I passed over Xenogears for Brave Fencer Musashi. I still enjoyed that game but in hindsight was a bad decision. lol

I know one guy at work now who knows what it is though. But he's only into current games.

I've seen people on this forum dismissing DKCR :?
Yes, it sucks theres no classic controller support but play the game for more than 2 hours and you'll get used to the waggle controls. In fact it's awesome to do speed runs with those waggle controls, it really gives the gameplay a nice feel of momentum to it.

I can't think of any game from recent years with this good level design and challenging gameplay. This game is really hard and challenging if you want to get 200% but it's not broken, you just need to practice.
