E3 2011
Re: E3 2011
Well that's just silly. If gamecube compatibility's the main reason you want it then why not just... use a gamecube?

Cheaper to buy a Wii with component cables than a cube with them?

True. But it was/is a selling point for the Wii currently. I know that I use my Wii for Cube games far more than my Cubes (which I think I have six of now).

why?
I can understand maybe not caring about b/c, but actively wanting it to be excluded or being happy about its exclusion?
I don't recall the exact moment that backwards compatibility became the "in" thing. Was it Nintendo including backwards compatibilty with GBM and GBC in the GBA, and then GBA in the DS? Was it Sony providing PS1 compatibility with the PS2? I don't know. I mean, I don't recall the SNES supporting NES games, the N64 supporting SNES games, the GC supporting N64 games, the Saturn supporting Sega CD games, the Dreamcast supporting Saturn games, or plenty of other examples. It used to be that when a new system was made, you got a NEW system. One that moved forward, and didn't hold itself up on the crutch of having to support a library of older games as well as an entire library of new ones.
I don't know about other people, but when I decide to buy a new, current generation system, playing the games of the last generation on it is not exactly my number one priority. I want to play the new games and experiences provided by new hardware. If I want to continue playing my older library..

..you've already got the idea. Sure, I understand the convenience of having one box by the television and not 15, but I personally don't prioritize convenience over quality of the gameplay experience. Have you tried the 3DS backwards compatibility? I'd rather use a DS! The PS2 backwards compatibility isn't perfect, the 360's is a joke..I mean, as retro enthusiasts gathered together here, one would think that the experience of playing on the proper hardware would trump backwards compatibility.
AppleQueso wrote:lack of backwards compatibility isn't a dealbreaker for me, and I doubt it is for anyone else either. It's just us going "No gamecube support? Darn, oh well."
The WiiU does not need to support a system two generations back. Anyone still hooked on their GameCube games likely has a way to play them already. Do I want to be paying extra dollars for my NEW hardware because a few holdouts can't get over their attachment to a handful of titles released 5 to 8 years ago? I don't think so.

Then those people are retarded. If you don't want to play the new games, why on Earth are you buying a new system? They need to stick with their precious GameCubes and sit in a corner with them and be forever happy. WAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH the WiiU doesn't support GameCube, WAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH the PSV won't take my UMDs, WAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, WAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, WAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Get over it already. It used to be just fine to have a new system with a new format, and it should still be today. Why should manufacturers be wasting their time trying to ensure their old library (running on different hardware) continues to stay compatible with the new? I'd rather that they spent that time developing something truly new to enjoy, frankly.

Manufacturers don't want you to stay with last gen hardware/games. I think people tend to forget that backwards compatibility isn't for the gamer's benefit; it's for the major gaming corporations. The only reason why BC is even made possible is to sell off what remains of their stock of old software; not to make things more convenient for a consumer.

Explain the Ps1 compatibility on the Ps3 please. Serious question, not trying to be a snarky smartass.

Re: E3 2011
I personally like having a single system hooked up that can play more than one library of games. It saves space.

You can still buy new PS1 games.
And I think the compatibility has more to do with being able to download PS1 titles off PSN but it's nice to be able to use a disc.
edit: and most importantly, the backwards compatibility is to capitalize on the popularity of older titles.
