I fall on the other end of it. I can't find logic in someone hating on Wind Waker other than the fetch quest for the triforce towards the end. I dismiss all the bitching about the sailing down to pure fucking laziness. Boo hoo, have to tack with the wind.
To me it's the only excellent 3D zelda they've made on a console with Ocarina trailing it. The pacing is solid, the areas are really fun, challenge is decent, the use of color, animation and exaggeration give it this beautiful luster that has aged far better than other titles as it's like a living cartoon. It's the one 3D Zelda I can tolerate to re-play. I had it on WiiU too, the swift sail admittedly saves time but makes the boating just BORING. Might as well be driving a car on water.

I think the sailing is pretty fucking lazy in and of itself actually. What with pointing the boat in a direction and waiting for ten minutes to actually get there.Tanooki wrote:I dismiss all the bitching about the sailing down to pure fucking laziness.
I bet Wind Waker is the most popular object of discussion in this entire thread.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

It's certainly a polarizing game, which makes it prime fodder for these sorts of discussions.

I'd throw more 10's at Zelda than most would I'm sure, but going through Wind Waker again with the WiiU release was a real chore after awhile and something I don't see myself playing ever again. And I feel like we just had this conversation haha. It is by far my least favorite Zelda and I even LIKE the art style and the smooth combat. But the pacing, world, atmosphere, music, level design, all fall flat.
Absolutely hated Phantom Hourglass. The first and only Zelda I've started that I literally did NOT want to finish. Doesn't helped that it looks terrible too. The blocky style of the earlier overhead Zelda's was something really appealing about them.
Zelda 2 absolutely rules.
My ranking would look something like this:
- Link to the Past
- Ocarina of Time
- Link's Awakening
- Twilight Princess / Skyward Sword
- Majora's Mask
- Oracle of Seasons
- Oracle of Ages
- The Legend of Zelda
- Zelda II
- Minish Cap
- Wind Waker
- the rest
Zelda vs Zelda II is debatable. There's a lot of nostalgia with the first game and the blueprints it set, but it really doesn't have legit puzzles or anything like that. The difficulty stems from the monster gangs in the later dungeons and if you didn't find the better swords and stuff you're screwed haha. Zelda II is such a weird game, but there's really not much wrong with it being some of the cryptic design. Has some fantastic music that I wish was remixed throughout the series more often.
First two games are probably 8/10 territory, and Minish Cap and Wind Waker are more 6/10 or so. Definitely not bad but not my favorites by far.

Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
I find it super interesting that Wind Waker seems so controversial here. Maybe it's that people have gone back to find they like it now. I seem to recall people being REAL negative about it on release in my schoolyard conversations.
Majoras Mask's controversy seems a bit more muted these days but I think, having played and loved both, that it is far more weird and should probably be way more polarizing than Wind Waker. Maybe it's just been discussed to death at this point.
Xeo have you tried A Link Between Worlds yet?

On the plus side, everyone here has been really civil about the whole thing. That's a rarity in a video game forum community.
Since I didn't get banned or warned, I'll mention my other opinion. This one concerns another classic: Yoshi's Story.
I think Nintendo did a bad job of setting expectations for the game outside Japan. When I was a kid, Yoshi's Story was hyped as "the next Yoshi's Island." (A "next-gen" Yoshi's Island, in fact.) In Japan, Yoshi was a popular character for very young children, and Yoshi's Story reflects that well. Outside Japan, I don't even think magazines, like Nintendo Power, cared to explain how simply-designed the game was. If I had to guess, I'd bet quite a few people bought the game with "Yoshi's Island 2" in mind. (Imagine beating a brand new $60 USD game in an hour!) That was, like, 15 years ago, though.
Today, I think most people understand where Yoshi's Story fits in the grand scheme: "Not Yoshi's Island, but has some of Yoshi's Island's concepts. Neither a deep game nor a difficult one, but not bad for its target audience." What does everyone else think?

Yoshi's Island is pretty amazing and it's disappointing that most of the Yoshi games have sucked since then. Wooly World looks amazing though so I'm excited to get that one eventually.
The naming was weird though. I don't even think it has "Super Mario World 2" anywhere on it in Japan? But I could be wrong.
It feels like most people are neutral on Majora's Mask, outside of its hardcore fans.

Nah sadly don't have a 3DS yet since I don't love handhelds, but I'm such a fanboy I think about the 3 Zelda's I need to play all the time haha. I'm curious how the two remakes stack up. Link to the Past is my favorite game of all time next to Super Metroid, so I'm not sure what my reaction to Link Between Worlds will be. I will say at a glance I don't like the aesthetics though... that weird overhead style with polygons. Too much of a sprite fanboy I guess, but I can get over that. I'll play them someday... if it's somewhere in the Oracle ~ Minish Cap ballpark quality wise for me, I'll be happy.RyaNtheSlayA wrote:Xeo have you tried A Link Between Worlds yet?
I might give Majora's Mask a little too much slack, for enjoying the awesome increase in difficulty after Ocarina. I have a lot of issues with Majora's Mask, namely with there only being 4 main dungeons, and all the fetch quests that changed the series forever afterwards, etc... but I don't know, I still look back on it extremely fondly for the weird story, darker atmosphere, and the insanity that is the Stone Tower dungeon. I have admittedly only played it once though, so I probably do need a refresher on it sometime. But Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword having more dungeons again and feeling a bit simpler in design with some aspects, I know I definitely like those more. And Ocarina of Time is basically 3D Link to the Past so I love it, haha.RyaNtheSlayA wrote:Majoras Mask's controversy seems a bit more muted these days but I think, having played and loved both, that it is far more weird and should probably be way more polarizing than Wind Waker. The only way to get banned from Racketboy is to criticize the Dreamcast.LensOfTruth wrote:Since I didn't get banned or warned
I think every Yoshi game since Yoshi's Island has been a disappointment. To be fair though, it's really hard to follow up on perfect.LensOfTruth wrote:What does everyone else think?

I like Yoshi's Story for what it is, and I think Woolly World is fantastic. I can pass on the rest though.Exhuminator wrote:The only way to get banned from Racketboy is to criticize the Dreamcast.LensOfTruth wrote:Since I didn't get banned or warnedI think every Yoshi game since Yoshi's Island has been a disappointment.
