Well, I was looking for a topic about the new xbox, but just found another console vs pc debate.
Either way, it sounds terrible and I have 0 interest at the moment.

Reading comments on articles. I think the fact that tech savvy gamers are arguing about how this console even works is a massive problem. Of course there's answers to these questions, and I'm sure there's a lot of misinformation out there at the moment, but that we went from "you buy a new console and some games" to "how do I play them? Do they install? Can I bring it to a friend's house? Can I buy used games? Does it have to be connected to the internet to work?" shows that they've turned something that worked for 30 years into a convoluted mess. And it hasn't been done in the name of making things better for consumers either.

But who cares about consumers as long as they keep consuming?

I...I shall consume.
Consume...Consume everything!

What a completely embarrassing, thin-skinned response. That it came from a moderator is doubly embarrassing. the obvious difference in our responses being that there is no instance where calling someone a complete and total asshole isn't offensive, where are claiming someone is uninformed isn't a sleight on them. Perhaps, dick, I said "no offense" because I meant that sentence - identifying your ignorance - in the literal sense and wished to leave no ambiguity with the connotation, because literal ignorance is actually a thing and not an insult. And, for the record, that "dick" comment? Offense intended. You seriously can't tell the difference between identified ignorance and an insult? Especially considering...Ack wrote:No offense, but the use of the phrase "no offense" makes you sound like a complete and total asshole. See? I just managed to call you an asshole and even drew your attention to it with a phrase that provides a half-assed attempt at covering myself from any potential flak. That's the real beauty of the phrase "no offense." It draws attention to and attempts to provide cover for a following insult that you wish to highlight.
This is your follow up sentence. After such a inflamed response to saying you're not well versed in this, you follow it up withFirst off, if you had read my post, then you should have noted that much of my experience is based on usage of past hardware and perceptions of how they continue to develop into the future. My PS3 hasn't let me play games while it was installing them, so I don't expect the next generation to do so either. That said, I also have seen nothing mentioning instant playback, though I'll look for it. But if installation uses any kind of processing power that might detract from the game that is being played at the same time, then it is still an issue for me because it distracts from the simple pick-up-and-play asthetic I was seeking.
This is ignorance. You don't know the situation at hand. You're basing your stance on outdated knowledge. Here, let me "look" for you:That said, I also have seen nothing mentioning instant playback, though I'll look for it.

Look for any coverage of the PS4 conference FROM FEBRUARY and they mention this. This is 3 month old information already. But, ok, assuming you missed this tidbit, from YESTERDAY, pertinent to this very topic at hand:During its PlayStation 4 announcement, Sony revealed that users will be able play online games before they are finished downloading to the system.

Information given in literally both of the console reveals we're discussing. If you haven't heard about this, it makes me question if you even watched these introductions in the first place. One thing that I don't question, however, is whether or not you were well versed in the subject: you weren't.Info on Microsoft's 'Meet Xbox One' page reveals the newly unveiled console allows you to play 'immediately as games install.' The Xbox One can install games to the console's 500GB hard drive. According to one report the console may require games to be installed, with a fee required if you want to install them onto a second account. Either way, going by this, players can boot games as soon as they start installing them.
This is technological ignorance. You sound like someone who doesn't know how technology works. You assume that because a camera is present, it's usable. An integrated camera is somehow always capturing.Second off, I see you have never encountered a piece of computer hardware with an integrated webcam and/or microphone. I have. Now no current OS may require them (though there is software that does. And if Microsoft is successful with this technology on a console, they will likely move quickly to port it to PCs, tablets, cellular telephones, or other handheld devices), but if you have a piece of compatible hardware equipped on your box, someone with the knowledge can use it for nefarious purposes such as data collection. For example, microphones can be activated remotely with the proper know how, even if the device is powered off, including computer mics and cellular telephones. The only option is to remove it entirely from its power source, including batteries.
No, devices must be mounted, driven, and initiated. Until I identify the drivers to windows, open up a module to initialize the hardware, and begin using it, the hardware might as well not be there.
Oh but wait, I'm sure you'll come up with some sort of horror story about someone taking over a computer through vague "hacking" methods and spying with the hardware. You wanna know how that's done? They SSL into the hardware using social engineering, and then manually initialize the hardware themselves. The camera doesn't just come alive on its own and get taken over.
Again: you aren't versed in what you're speaking about.
While it's quaint that you claim to have used steam in offline mode, you clearly haven't tried it in some time. How do I know? Because this was a major identified issue over a year ago that got resolved. It was a cache clearing bug when entering offline mode. This got patched ages ago. Perhaps if you were well versed you would know this.Third, I have used Steam in offline mode, but have had repeated issues with it not working properly to the point that I don't bother to play if I do not have a steady internet connection. Games for Windows Live I have yet to find an offline mode(I have only recently tried it). Games that require more than one active DD(such as a Steam-based version of Iron Brigade), I shudder to think about.
This was an awful reply from you and I've replied in kind. Next time show more restraint and don't infer insults when none are explicitly intended.

how awesome is it that this thread is inching towards XBOX Live levels of discourse?

Doesn't matter what you intended. "No offense" makes you sound like a dick. It's similar to "with all due respect".TheSonicRetard wrote:Perhaps, dick, I said "no offense" because I meant that sentence - identifying your ignorance - in the literal sense and wished to leave no ambiguity with the connotation, because literal ignorance is actually a thing and not an insult.
