The funny thing about Mutually Assured Destruction is that no one is entirely sure if it works. We'll only find out when it fails.

Not to mention the Russians have showed that they care more about not losing than giving up land. Russia was the only place Napoleon couldn't really take it because they burned their own country rather than have it be taken over. Napoleon's army moved like locusts, i.e. extremely quick and light while consuming all the resources along the way. They could cover 100 miles a day marching, which is insane by the standards of the day, until they reached the crazy Russians. They evacuated the towns and villages and burned thousands of miles of their own territory so the invading force could not sustain itself. That is the mindset an invading force would have to battle

History can be a treacherous little bitch. Who could have predicted that the financial collapse of the 1930s would lead to the genocidal state of Nazism? All those analysts are talking out of their bungholes. Comparing Putin to Hitler of course is beyond absurd, but he won't be leader of the Russian Federation forever, and there's no ideology here that seeks to incorporate other nations into its midst.

You give too much credit to Russia and not enough credit to head lice.

Ack, I get what you are saying and I think I agree but... Are you implying that if you have big enough weapons you can do anything you like , for example march into other nations and taking over, but if you are weaker like Afghanistan or Iraq you will be pushed around because bigger nations can "bully" you ?
Lets say we do some mixing with historical events. What if the Sept. 11 bombings were done by Russians. Will the USA do to Russia what they did to Afghanistan or will they act like they are acting now against whats happening in the Ukraine ?

Pretty much. This was a lesson learned very early on the playground.

What you probably would have seen is Russia bending over backwards to root out the people who did that after we asked them to. Tying that event back to Russia is a pretty classic international incident, and that's not something we would have been able to let go. With Ukraine it's fairly easy for the American public to go "eh, we don't need to get involved".

^Agreed. Russia probably would have been more compliant with finding the small group responsible for the attacks. The problem with the Middle Eastern countries is the strong Islamic ties to the government and the obstacles that entails. Putin wouldn't want a a huge American force on Russian ground and would have more than likely used his KGB ties to eradicate the responsible parties, or at least gave the American people some sort of scapegoat.

Anytime the EU offers Russia an Ultimatum..

The protesters in Kiev died for the chance of living in a country where there is rule of law, and out of the sphere of influence of the extremely corrupt ways of Putinland, and the US has bothered more with sanctions than the EU (whose flags the protesters were waving).
And the biggest shame for me was that my own country cared more about potential loss of Russian tourists than people's rights (though of course it wasn't alone. Cyprus and the city in London didn't want to lose all the money they wash for Russians, France didn't want to have to cancel the sale of 2 battleships (shortsighted doesn't even begin to describe this) and Germans are afraid they might have to pay more for gas. bu-fucking-hu).
Really what all Europeans need is a mandatory "soviet summer-winter" camp experience then they are in their late teens-early 20s, so they would know just how important freedom is, and the price for it is usually measured in blood, and we should be glad we might only have to pay money for it.

@ZeroAX.
True, but the USA also has less to lose from the sanctions so they can afford to look more pro-active. Germany being worried about gas prices and Greece about tourism, especially in the state your economy is in, are legitimate concerns. There are also some ways in which EU and US law differ that make things difficult.
