Could I get some clarification on what the MTG "Planeswalker" Box Sets were? I know a fair amount about magic but I can't even google info on what this is.

Yeah, it's ridiculous to find any info on them. Lemme pull out the boxes and take a look.

EDIT:

The front show a character and have a short "description" of the color.

The back of each say:

YOU ARE A
PLANESWALKER

You are one of the most powerful
spellcasters in the Multiverse.
Other planeswalkers will challenge you with
arsenals of spells and legions of creatures.
To emerge victorious, you must outwit them with weapons of your own.

Those weapons are in your hands now.
How you wield them will
determine your destiny.
Gaming accomplishments:
Nibbler (marathon): 251,169,160 / Nibbler (one life): 5,263,360 (WR)
Donkey Kong: 423,100 [L12-1] (150th place as of 2019-01-15)
Super Smash Bros. (N64): Ranked top 5 in Wisconsin from Q1 2016 to Q2 2017
Shrek SuperSlam: won largest tournament in game's history (Shrekfest 2018)

Sounds like a starter deck, or rather a bunch of them.

Pretty much. Each deck contains 30 cards and a poster-like fold-out that has rules, terms, etc.

Oh, these are the new intro packs. It's a bunch of commons and uncommons that comprise a functioning (if not legal) deck, and they're good for pitting against each other when you want to teach your friends. There's no complicated rules and the card mix has enough variety that they get an introduction to instants and creater combat.
