It would be a golden age of gaming if every publisher united under one platform. No more gimped ports. All money and programming effort could be put behind one version of the games. Consider all the man-hours of work put into porting games to 3-4 platforms. Those developers could be making new games instead. That sounds pretty "good for the industry" to me.Violent By Design wrote:I wouldn't mind, was pretty convenient having almost all of the good games on one machines.RyaNtheSlayA wrote:The GameCube and Xbox came out after the Dreamcast was discontinued. Sega died and transformed into an awful publishing house under Sammy. Sales slowed down a ton after the PS2 released. Sega had to give them away (under SegaNet) to get rid of some of the stock in warehouses. I don't see how you could not consider that a complete and utter failure compared to the others.RCBH928 wrote:Why is the PS2 always blamed for killing the Dreamcast? Also, this is ironic but, the NGC while it sold DOUBLE the Dreamcast units I do not see how it is looked at as a successful Nintendo console but the Dreamcast as a failure . The original Xbox sold just as many units too.
Also the GameCube was pretty well considered a failure by Nintendo internally, as was the original Xbox by Microsoft.
Edit: The PS2 was basically the juggernaut of that gen. I really hope we don't see a repeat of that. I don't think it was or is good for the industry for that sort of thing to happen.

PC master race yadda yadda yadda. I'm glad it wasn't like that in the old days, but I don't think it matters anymore. They're pretty much the same.Zing wrote:It would be a golden age of gaming if every publisher united under one platform. No more gimped ports. I love all the crazy ports back in the 80s/90s. Now game ports don't have much to differentiate themselves from one another.o.pwuaioc wrote:PC master race yadda yadda yadda. I think the Wii U may end up being the last system that "feels" like a gaming console. PS4 and Xbone are sterile gimped PCs with "media hub" functionality.

But it wouldn't work like that. Choices create competition which keeps prices from skyrocketing and tends to help spur innovation. Let's think of instances where (near) monopolies were or would have been bad.Zing wrote:It would be a golden age of gaming if every publisher united under one platform. No more gimped ports. Nintendo forced horrible licensing limits on 3rd party companies and insisted on making all cartridges for the NES themselves. Yes they were trying to prevent another market crash, but that crash was part of the self leveling nature of the market. If they hadn't been challenged and defeated in court we'd all be paying a lot more for our games these days.
The Saturn release might not have been knifed in the gut if the PS1 hadn't been able to release for $100 less.
Without the PS4, the XBone probably would have been able to tell gamers "tough shit no used games and enjoy your DRM". MS only backed down because people seemed to be flocking to Sony.
Heck, even DOS PCs were far more expensive until Compaq made the first IBM clones and market prices started coming down.

I saw the ending of the last of us, i'm a few hours to finish the game but me and a friend were playing at the same time so his game was almost at the same as mine so i just decided to watch the rest of the game... and i can't think of a best ending for a game... it fits perfectly, you like or not. I not gonna lie and say i didn't like the last because i did, and a lot, but to be honest is not a game i would like to see a lot more... but it seems that this is the thrend that newer games are gonna take.

If the plate is one you can live with, yes. I got one several years ago with a hideous orange faceplate with a blurred screen thinking that another one more to my liking could be found cheap. Was shocked to find that was not the case, the official ones were pricey and uncommon.oxymoron wrote:Is a GB Micro with 1 plate worth $25?
Settled on a vinyl skin instead, as the price was right. Looks good, but gotta be careful about protecting the exposed screen.

I ended up buying it. I posted about it in the "Look what I found" thread.Bikeage wrote:If the plate is one you can live with, yes. Also the Dreamcast was already buried before the Gamecube and XBox came into the picture.BurningDoom wrote:Because PS2 had a marketing empire behind them, with Sony's money to burn. Sega didn't. Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
During work today, I stopped at a gas station/McDonald's in the middle of nowhere. I had only ten minutes to spare. In the hallway between the convenience store and the McDonald's, I saw...
A Neo Geo MVS. It was flawless, and I could choose between Metal Slug X, Strikers 1945, Fatal Fury, and some soccer game.
When I turned around, I saw some hunting games, some bowling games, and a shinobi arcade machine.

I've never seen one of these before, not even in a big arcade. But now there's one in a gas station in the middle of the plains somewhere in Wisconsin.
McDonalds took so long with my food, I didn't get to play either of them.
