Coins are not useless. Your speed increases as you collect them. Now if you had max coins, then yes it is kind of useless. Banana peels are awesome and help a bunch if you use them properly. I always seem to luck out and get the horn to keep me locked into first place.darsparx wrote:Seriously everytime I'm in first place especially in a single player race, it always seems to stop giving me the useful power ups instead it's coins and peels(which never seem to really help) with a few shells here and there but still not a ton of good powerups when in the top 2....YoshiEgg25 wrote:If it was random, I'd be getting Bullet Bills in first place.
I mean, it's way deeper than that, but it's a start to saying that you're completely wrong.

In MK8 they're based on time behind first, so the more someone is lagging the better items they get.darsparx wrote: Seriously everytime I'm in first place especially in a single player race, it always seems to stop giving me the useful power ups instead it's coins and peels(which never seem to really help) with a few shells here and there but still not a ton of good powerups when in the top 2....
I think there are balance issues to potentially address, since things really tend to start favoring someone that gets out in front early. They don't have people slamming into them, and not many can actually target 'em. Basically, it's not the guy in first that's taking the red shells, it's the guy in 2nd, or 4th, and so on.
I'm not saying you don't get those rare photo finishes where someone comes from behind, but more often it's the middle of the pack kicking the crap out of the rest of the middle of the pack, ensuring that the guy in first has even less to worry about.
Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
I know what I'm talking about well enough with the 1P racing as I've never ignored a version of the game to date other than the arcade one I've never seen. I did fail to mention what someone else did, if you're up front the good items just don't occur and you get the less desirable stuff but that's to be expected. I get that some MK fanboys would get defensive over what I'm saying, and that's cool, but it is what it is, it's a party game more than a racer and that's why so many get into it. Since I don't like multiplayer online stuff for the most part and enjoy throwback single player stuff it doesn't do a lot for me like it once did but I'm not in any way saying the game is bad.

Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
The item complaints just seem weird for this game, since I think they actually improved upon them in this game. Not being able to store two items at once makes it impossible to stack multiple good items coming into a good place, and having the horn makes for some interesting play, since you will want to keep it to get into first if the race is within the first lap or so and the chances for a blue shell are high, or you may want to toss it and go for a quicker, better item to try to gain pace.
Your complaints fit all the games, but this game least of them, which is why I think people are questioning your criticisms.
Having played Mario Kart in a somewhat serious fashion since the n64, and quite seriously since the DS game, this seems to easily be the best entry, by far.

@Tanooki
It's disingenuous to compare any Mario Kart to Mario Party though as MP is game where progression is quite literally decided by a dice roll.
Even Mario Kart Wii, with its overbearing power-ups, can be beaten with good driving skill and proper item use (and much raging). Mario Party however can take you from first to last because you rolled a six instead of a five. I think that's why people are having a problem with what you said.

Erm yeah, shameless plug, I know... And I promise I won't do it often, but I just started a new blog and I'm keen to hopefully appeal to a few people other than just myself. Since the first post is somewhat relevant, figured I'd post it.

Feel free to advertise your shitty blog, I love reading these things from you guys. More commentaries on games the better.Reprise wrote:Erm yeah, shameless plug, I know... Interesting list, been meaning to check out that Zombi-U.
How does the new DKC compare to the Wii one?

I'll be honest, I've never played the Wii DKC, so I'm afraid I couldn't tell you sorry. I hear it's essentially 'more of the same' but more polished and generally a bit better.

When Wind Waker HD came out, a lot of us we're talking about which of our favorite Games of Nintendo Past we'd love to see HD remakes of. And while many of them might just be pipe dreams, I think Nintendo is really missing out on an opportunity.
I really think Nintendo should make an HD version of Super Mario Sunshine. It compares to Wind Waker almost perfectly. They were both on the same console. So I would think it wouldn't be any more or less difficult to retool into a Wii U game than Wind Waker was. Being on the same console, they're both about the same age (this matters to some people - if it's too soon they'll deem it a cash-in or something).
Both Sunshine and Wind Waker weren't received too well when they were originally released on the Gamecube. We all know the story. For Wind Waker, no one seemed to like the cartoon cell graphics and the sailing. For Sunshine, it was FLUDD. But we were wrong about Wind Waker. It looks beautiful in HD. Of course, they improved the lighting greatly, but the same could be done to Sunshine. A lot of people that overlooked Wind Waker on the Gamecube are now enjoying it on the U. I think the same could be said for a Sunshine HD remake, if it was made. It was a game that was overlooked, same as Wind Waker, and unfairly so. Like Wind Waker, the core gameplay is fun.
I just think it's a great game that a lot of people, myself included, didn't get to fully enjoy. It's completely overlooked when compared to Mario 64 or the Galaxy games. But on it's own, it's still a fantastic Mario game. I think an HD remake would sell well. People that already like it could re-experience it in the beauty of HD, people that overlooked it back when can experience it for the first time, people that didn't give it a fair chance back when can re-experience it today, and of course a new generation of gamers can experience it for the first time.
I think Nintendo missed a huge opportunity with Luigi's Mansion. It was a launch title that was somewhat overlooked when it was released, but now it seems to have gained popularity. With the release of Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, and the Year of Luigi, Nintendo should have released an HD remake of the original Gamecube game. I think it would have sold well then, but not so much now. Maybe they thought the gameplay wouldn't hold up today, and maybe due to the gameplay of Dark Moon? Either way, I think it's too late now. That ship has sailed.
And I know we've all said it already, but, who wouldn't buy HD remakes of Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2? I know Nintendo would catch some flak for re-releasing the games too soon after their initial release. "Grrr, they're just cashing in. rehash, blah". Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3, the Jax and Daxter trilogy, and the Ratchet and Clank trilogy all got HD remakes in the same amount of time. Nintendo even had the "new play control" series on the Wii.
There's plenty of HD remakes of games a generation or less old. I know this was all discussed before, but I was just thinking about it again. Why does Nintendo only have 1 HD remake? I just feel like they're missing out on an opportunity. And also, yeah, there's plenty of games that I would want an HD remake of.

I'm with you there, I would love some HD remasters from Nintendo, especially the games you mentioned.
Sunshine is so underrated, it's almost criminal.
