Given how Nintendo has struggled to get and keep devs in the past 20 years and how vitally important they are to the keeping the console gaming market even marginally creative and unique (in my opinion, anyway), I'm fine with this. Besides, I get to have Splatoon on my shelf twice.
Isiolia nailed it. This is the next gen Tegra Shield tablet that was being promised for this year. Notice how that vanished mysteriously from the news months ago and now Nvidia jumps instantly with their own prspin press release right on the heels of Nintendo about their alliance and nextgen tegra power. Rocket science need not apply to do the math on this one.
This is in now way in hell a bridge system. This isnt another tier, this is Nintendo being concise for once and scaling back to a level not seen since 1988... SINGLE SYSTEM SUPPORT. This is their one and only flagship. 3DS will linger on to be fair probably into 2018 but with moderate at best support as a budget box against this thing.
Nintendo if you look at all there is in the info and alliances now are betting the farm on this. Its no halfass toe test this time, its sink or swim.

Amiibos could literally do nothing and I'd still probably buy a few of the ones I like.

They could literally do nothing and I'd still probably buy all of them. Idk. I guess I'd want them to do to SOMETHING, but it could be as inconsequential as unlocking a pallet swap or ribbon or some shit, and I'd still buy them all.
As others have said, Nintendo has confirmed Amiibo support. Yay!
Now as far as backwards compatibility, this gen Nintendo developed a good amount of games, but due to the low install base of the Wii U, I have to believe there is a plan to re-package and re-sell their Wii U software, much like they did with Wii when they added original Wii titles to the Wii U eShop. Disc drive or not, I believe all the nessisary buttons, cameras, and motion controls will be available, and we will see Nintendo make up some of the development cost of Wii U games a generation late.
I'm very excited for more Splatoon and a new Mario64!
Nintendo would be doing themselves a disservice, if you think about it, by NOT port and reselling a lot of their Wii U games. Xenoblade Chronicles X, Yoshi's Woolly World, Splatoon, and Captain Toad were all AMAZING games. Digitally, at the very least, they NEED to be ported and resold.
Own: Sega Mega Drive, Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast, Playstation 1, Playstation 2, Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Playstation 5, PS Vita, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Nintendo Gamecube, Nintendo Wii U, Nintendo Gameboy Advance, Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox, Xbox 360
Its kind of a duh moment even bringing up WiiU ports you know? The 3DS this year and next is getting more WiiU ports. Already there has been the Hyrule Warriors and Wii Xenoblade, but now comes Mario Maker and Yoshis Wooly World already confirmed.
Its pretty obvious this was them puttingthe last2 nails in the coffin with the 3DS stuff and this Switch video. As the screen should have touch, I would not be shocked to see Starfox and any other decent title that they barely broke even on or fell short due to crappy system sales getting a second life (and first life for many.) It would be the right thing to do and would help them stack the deck with added projects with far better market penetration.
I don't get the hand-wringing over the lack of backwards compatibilty. The switch isn't well suited for a disc drive, and who would prefer playing 3DS games on a tablet, anyway? Sheer impracticalities aside, the Wii U sold so poorly that I can't blame Nintendo for wanting to leave the past behind them.
