Re: Amiibo!!
I don't think Nintendo has found that sweet spot with supply yet. Hell, each figure could be $20 and they could actually increase the profit on each figure, instead of the $70 of profit a reseller is making on a Jigglypuff right now.
I can't help but think a small tweak in the supply algorithm would be beneficial to Nintendo's bottom line. The supply will sell off.
I can still hope though that another round of preorders happens after this initial swarming. But it's unlikely, I think.

By and large, yes, it is where things have shifted. The vast majority of content today is available digitally somewhere, and can be purchased pretty much on a whim. Not just regarding DLC, but digital purchases period. Maybe you have to wait, or purchase the content instead of using the code in the box...but it's available.Flake wrote: ...but that's not how most things have shifted. We still have timed DLC, system exclusive DLC, multiple SKUs at launch where premium items are shuttered away behind DLC codes that are printed on paper and useless after one use.
How is it a good model? If you're paralleling it to DLC, it's more or less a character-based season pass, which might be a good value (Mario) or incredibly poor (Wii Fit Trainer?)...but either way, if Nintendo were slicing little chunks out of their games to unlock via the shop, people would be screaming bloody murder. Tying them to a figure not everyone can get their hands on isn't exactly better. If you can point out to me where Nintendo is doing something that isn't better than their competitors with the one exception of limited stock for some models (due largely to a past circumstance that was entirely out of Nintendo's control) then I'd be interested to see what you have.
That said, compare to the games that do that. Fighters for instance - alt costume unlocks, announcer voices, colors, avatars, and so on. IE, go look at Guilty Gear Xrd Sign on the Playstation Store. 'cept...an avatar is 49 cents. Color packs are 99 cents. The kind of DLC that would be similar to Amiibo unlocks isn't $14, it's a few bucks at best. Hell, there's a free PS+ color set, and a free holiday color set as well.
Grabbing that stuff for a few favorite characters wouldn't even cost as much as -one- Amiibo, and it wouldn't take preordering anything.
Re: Amiibo!!
Nintendo is taking advantage of their position in the market place where they have the most powerful stable of recognizable and profitable mascots of any company in the entire industry.
This is the entire reason why Amiibo works and why it is brilliant. It is a system of DLC that rewards players that gobble up everything Nintendo produces. Yeah, you're right about .49 cent DLC costumes in a single game being a better value than, say , the costumes in Mario Kart 8.
But the market that Nintendo is catering to doesn't just have Mario Kart 8. They have both copies of Smash Bros 4, a New 3DS XL, Hyrule Warriors, Mario Party 10 and Splatoon on pre-order. If you are not a large scale of consumer of Nintendo's products then absolutely it is not a DLC system that will benefit you. But then that type of occasional consumer is not the brand loyal shopper that Nintendo caters to. Nintendo would have died in the Gamecube days if it weren't for the brand adherents and they know that.
This is a company that does not give a care about 3rd party support. Why would they also care at all about a DLC model that only benefits 3rd parties?

Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Got Charizard, Pac Man, and Wario via Best Buy yesterday.
Took off work early to hit up gamestop, only 3 people in my town showed up. But as you know web problems slowed ordering. Was only wanting Ness, Robin, and Lucina as I got the others at Best Buy but it was easier to try and get the bundle so I got the bundle and the 3pk Splatoon bundle after an hour or so of waiting. The employees were cool in having 3 computers up trying for us and making others wait.
Went to work this morning and when I got in the parking lot and saw on my line app that Greninja was up and got an order in (but we'll see how that goes). s1mplehumar I actually tried to go back in and send one to my parents house just in case you didn't get one but I was too late and it was gone.
Now I guess I really need to focus on Jigglypuff, luckily Target is only 40 mins away vs the TRU that's 1.5-2hrs drive.

The only reason I wanted any Amiibos were for my Fire Emblem collection and of course they are the biggest pain in the ass ones to get...

@ girlracer
You're too kind. I appreciate the effort.
I've got doubles of everything Wave 4 now, except Greninja. Being first in line at Gamestop last night helped tremendously.
We've still got time to work it out.

Re: Amiibo!!
I did manage to snag an extra Ness, so if someone has an extra Wario they're willing to part with, I'd be up for a trade.
