It looks a bit better since the N64 is all around better at 3D (in this game's case, the blurry textures don't really hurt anything as they're pretty simple to begin with). It's a tradeoff though, as the sound is noticeably muffled.

I see. I played through Mega Man Legends and then Tron Bonne in January. The game was certainly simplistic on the graphical front though. Have yet to play Legends 2 though.

The simple, stylized graphics I think help it age a lot better visually. It's got a distinct look to it.

I didn't have a problem with it. It certainly has a kinda...pastel and cartoony look.

aaron wrote:sort of, but i actually do hate the N64. worst "popular" console in my opinion by far. the action max and supervision and all of the countless other garbage consoles that didn't have a huge adoption rate (and by huge i'm including TG16, Jaguar, 3DO, even CD-i) really don't factor into it i don't think.

In that case I agree with you. Well, I prefer N64 over pre-NES consoles and quite possibly the SMS.

This. There's a lot of people who grew up on Nintendo 64 who think it's the shit because of their rose tinted glasses. I love cartoony games and I have a high tolerance for "outdated 3D" graphics and games and I can tell that a lot of the popular N64 games like Banjo-Kazooie and Ocarina of Time are bad if you look at them objectively. On the other hand those (S)NES games that are hyped (Donkey Kong Country, Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG and so on) are good games regardless of did you play them as a kid or not.
My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

Wtf is this shit? Do you think that those of us who say we like the N64 only sit around remembering the thing and never actually play it? My N64 gets fired up all the damn time.

Also, did you really just talk about how Banjo and OOT are "bad if you look at them objectively" and then turn around and praise Donkey Kong Country?

I've played through Ape Escape multiple times and I know for a fact that I wouldn't like the game nearly as much as I do if I hadn't played it as a kid. Besides we're on a collector forum. There's plenty of those people who've sold their old consoles a long time ago who like to talk about the "good old days" in youtube and so on. And casual retro gamers.

Last time I checked, Donkey Kong Country 1&2 were one of the best platformers of all time. Awesome soundtracks, pushed the limits of SNES graphics, a lot of different kinds of levels and the gameplay itself is great. It's by no means a sluggish, inaccurate platformer with camera problems and a poorly designed difficulty curve while many if not most early 3D platformers are like that. Not to mention that they generally focus on exploration and finding items rather than you know, platforming.

OOT is vastly overrated, although I aknowledge it's merits and influence. New Zelda games improved upon OOT. The same thing can not be said about new Sonic, Donkey Kong and Crash Bandicoot games, to name a new franchises that were better/equally good on 16 bit consoles&PS1.

Honestly, I don't have any real beef with DKC. It's not hard to find plenty of strong criticism of the games though. "Overrated" gets tossed around a lot with those, especially the first one. You know, kinda like a certain Zelda game you claim to know the objective truth about.

Really, that's the thing. The idea of an "objective opinion," especially with regards to the quality of a video game, is just flat out silly to me.

The term objective might be out of place in this context, I agree, but it's a fact that some games hold up better than others when analyzed from a game desing POV. DKC is from a technical/design POV better than Generic Nintendo 64 3D platformer Number 1, even if both were as enjoyable for you as a kid.
