Here's an unpopular opinion - RTS sucks!

Nah, I'm just kidding. But I do think the genre as a whole is somewhat overrated.

Personally, the only RTS games I ever REALLY liked I can count on one hand and still have a couple of fingers left over. One of them has the word Starcraft in the title and the other two have the word Homeworld.
Have: Sega Genesis, SNES, Atari 2600, Atari 7800, Atari 800XL, PC, N3DS XL, Wii U, GBA, Xbox One, Switch

Want: Games!!!

I'm not a big fan of the genre either, but I can respect it.

That said, one of those fingers of yours should be cherished and the other should be lopped off. I'll let you guess which one is which.

You're leaving out one finger completely there... I'm guessing you don't like Starcraft? I can see that. I don't love it - I just consider it representative of the genre as a whole in a lot of ways.

But I loved Homeworld and Homeworld: Cataclysm!

I think we've established what the best RTS game is.

The funny thing is my favorite aspect of RTS's is simply the base building. I would even rage quit back in the day if I started losing (to the AI haha, never played much online).

So I've always figured I'd maybe be a fan of the sim building economy games or whatever like Civilization, but I have yet to try them. It's almost like I'm worried they will destroy my time and may love them. lol

The only 4X style game I ever got into was Deadlock and Deadlock II (which is more of a special edition than a sequel really).

Kind of like you with RTS, I had more fun building than fighting so when I was young I'd turn the AI way down and make the map huge so they'd be far away from me so I could just sit around and enjoy building alien cities.

I can agree with that, I loved to create a base and just build and enjoy doing it. It was possible with the normal earlier era RTS games from Blizzard (Warcraft1+2) and Westwood(Dune2+C&C) but shortly after with the rise of Starcraft and later C&C and many peoples me-too knockoffs, it went to crap. Because you know you have to always improve and change things that aren't broken things went bad. RTS's now fucking suck. They're not as much about (speaking of 1P mode) skill, it's about learning what the AI is scripted to do and only react in the singularly(or near that) way possible or you die, maybe immediately, or it will be a slow painful gunshot to the gut wound. That's why with stuff like Tiberian Sun and Warcraft 3 I stopped buying them because it took the skill, fun, and choice of how to develop your base/army out of the picture and turned it into a mad dash to do what the script wants or you die. It's like they intentionally murdered the 1P campaign so they could just sell a badass online campaign. When you hear Starcraft 2, do you hear about they story much? Nope, just all the amazing online matches. It's kind of how the FPS went into the toilet except for some stand outs, you get a minimally thought out small (and thin) campaign mode, and then all the effort goes to the online aspect using the thin campaign as a cover to box up a game.

I never really enjoyed the RTS genre either. I don't know why, but it just never did anything for me. I do however enjoy turned based strategy thanks to the wonderful Warsong and Shining force games that got me into them.

I'm the exact same way. I never play online unless it's on a team with my friends against AIs because I play it like a nation building sim more than a "kill everything and win" game. I think that's why I love Civilization and Superpower so much. I strongly urge you to try Civ V and Superpower 2 if you like the more sim aspect of RTS games.
