I tried to get into Crystalis a few times, but it's never hooked me.

But Ys Book I & II on TurboDuo lays waste to virtually every video game ever made.

I'm actually surprised that someone could like Zelda and Crystalis but not Ys. To me that's like saying, "R-Type and Gradius sure are fun... but Darius, fuck that game!"
That's the exact version I'm playing. I'm 100% not seeing what you see in it.

I'm not sure about that, the bump system completely changes the dynamic to me. Felt like I was doing nothing and couldn't get into it. If you're just comparing the old ones here. That'd be more like comparing a pinball game to a shooter. lmao

I still can't pinpoint my issues with the later games. I like the anime aesthetics and never mind things like that, but I don't really like the 3D art style that much and it doesn't seem memorable. So that probably was a factor.

To be fair I'm totally drawing a blank on any "top down" PS2 era ARPG's that I like or even played. I have no idea. This just might be one of those genres that worked best for me in the 8/16bit eras.

Every genre or game ever made works best in the 8/16-bit era.

You have to play Crystalis very differently from Ys or Zelda, what with the charge shots being your only real reliable damage-dealer. Up close combat tends to be rather fraught with peril.

For the record, I love Crystalis. I think it's probably better than the original Zelda (there, I said it!). My other favorite ARPG on the system is Willow, just because the combat feels so good. Like a proto-Link to the Past.

The two things that have been bugging me about Ys are the arbitrary nature of how damage resolves on a double head on collision and then just how swingy the combat numbers are; if I suddenly become a neigh-invulnerable superman with a couple of levels that feels like bad balance.

The damage received/dealt from head-on collisions is determined by level and equipment. Try to avoid head-on collisions with stronger enemies, obviously.

Most of these old computer ARPGs are short with low level caps (like, level 10 or so) that must be reached to complete the game. So yeah, the difference between something like level 5 and 6 will be huge.

The PCE version of Ys actually handles leveling the best, as the XP from the first game carries into the second. All other versions of Ys I essentially force the player to reach the max level halfway through the game, which makes fighting enemies in the (huge) final dungeon pointless.

This is the big quibble I have with Dawn of Ys, and why I took a break from it. Lovely game, but the constant forced grinding gets old. I find that I have to grind up about five levels in between each boss, and the further into the game I get, the longer it takes to grind up said levels.

Right, I get that. But it seems weird that sometimes in a head on collision it doesn't even score a hit for the enemy and other times it does, completely arbitrarily. If it was always scoring a hit (which might be 0 damage if I'm leveled up enough) or if it was based on something tangible to the encounter then it'd make more sense.

question for those that have played the Android/iOS versions of the Baldur's Gate Enhanced games... how do they play on a tablet? My Shield is 8", will I be squinting to try to see stuff? How well do the touch controls work? Etc?
