Getting into this just a bit, there's certainly a degree of staleness in pretty much every genre, but as stated before, if it's a genre you like, you tend to pick up on the subtle differences that are there. One of the most "repetitive" genres is the side-scrolling beat-'em-up, but I like those. So I see a huge difference between Double Dragon, Final Fight, King of Dragons, Streets of Rage 1/2, Knights of the Round, TMNT, and so forth. Even though all of them devolve into "walk to the right and beat up a bunch of dudes".
Fighting games are another great example. On the surface, 2D fighters seem like the same stuff over and over, but it's the hidden depth there that makes certain entries worthwhile, and that's before you get to obviously different styles of games like comparing Capcom vs. SNK 2 to Marvel vs. Capcom 2.
Now, there are entire genres that I typically ignore, but I'm under no illusions that there isn't some innovation going on there. And despite what I've said above, there are plenty of titles that try to ape the popular games of the time. As far as FPSs go, there are certainly plenty of them that don't do much interesting beyond the big names, but at the same time, I can appreciate that there is diversity there... if you're looking. Since I breeze over a lot of genres, I'm not always looking.
(So, folks have probably figured out the ones I typically ignore. RTSs, FPSs, Tetris-style puzzlers, and SRPGs are the ones that immediately come to mind as ones I pass over, although it is possible for good ones to get their hooks into me every now and then.)

Almost my exact opposite. SRPGs are perhaps one of my favorite genres. I also have a fondness for RTS and some FPS games.prfsnl_gmr wrote:<high-five>Sarge wrote:I typically ignore RTSs, FPSs, Tetris-style puzzlers, and SRPGs

God, especially those awful Mario games. Those games are all terrible. Except NSMB2 on 3DS. That game was a masterpiece.Exhuminator wrote:I know right? They're all the same. Stale.

Giant Obvious Weakpoint™ has been around since the cyclops in Homer's Odyssey. It's a classic.marlowe221 wrote:That's Earth Defense Force in a nutshell. Lost Planet kind of set that and since then, it's always hilarious when third person shooters with aliens/monsters/robots have gigantic orange blobs for weak-points. Vanquish took it to another level.

Sorry, going back a bit here with this post, but I really identify strongly with this. It's really tough for me to be objective about Romancing Saga 3 or Tales of Phantasia after I just got done cranking through games like Treasure of the Rudras or Chaos Seed for example. It's getting to the point where I have no idea if any of these games actually stand out on their own, or if I'm just burnt out.Sarge wrote:I've become increasingly jaded as a gamer. Things I would have thought awesome at one time now feel played out. I mean, for crying out loud, I often get burned out on JRPGs where I didn't anymore because I've seen it all before. This isn't necessarily a slam against that game's quality, it just means that I've been gaming for too long for anything to really hit me with "newness".
Just saying it's funny to see Nintendo being derided for not "bringing back that warm and fuzzy special new feeling" when I've written that off as a possibility a looooooong time ago.
