I watch things based on suggestions from certain people on forums, people I know in real life, or certain youtubers whose opinions I tend to agree with. Sometimes I also just go with my gut. If something looks interesting to me, I'll just check it out. It's not perfect, youtubers I follow have recommended things in the past that I hated, but I trust people like that more than I do "critics", "experts" and "professionals"

I've discovered some great retro games recently recommended by people that were critically panned when they originally released. I trust regular everyday people more than I do "professionals".

Metacritic, rotten tomatoes, etc. are completely irrelevant to me in 2025 and I honestly don't know anyone who gives a crap about those sites. I can't believe people still care about that stuff. Get with the times man.

- I like going for ratings and 3-5 lines reviews by viewers/fans. I got no time to watch 10min video or 2 page blog post about every film I am considering. That kind of review is good for people who are specifically interested in a movie or want to further investigate or got questions about it.

-MC and IMDB got mix of pro critics and average people so that gives a balanced opinion.

-I will go with recommendations from users on forums and reddit as well.

-Lists of "similars" are a great source too.

I just watched The Cooler and other 20 year old movies and other than cellphones, there is hardly anything that tells these movies are not contemporary, you can release them to theater today and no one will notice. I mean 20 years is literally history. Its scary to think all those actors got +20 years on them. In the 90's I remember you can easily identify movies from past decades as each decade had a unique style to it, at least until you reach black and white era which I am unable to tell if its from the 30's, 40's or 50s.

1. Chime
2. A Different Man
3. Rumours
4. The Substance
5. Trap
6. Bramayugam
7. Anora
8. One More Shot
9. The Apprentice
10. The Count of Monte-Cristo

Honourable Mention: Angels Fallen: Warriors of Peace (so bad it's good)
Now that a lot of the foreign and festival releases are coming in, this list is a lot different. There's also some re-ordering:

1. Souleymane's Story
2. Eephus
3. Fatal Fixer Upper (so bad it's good but a fantastic analysis on modern day poverty row filmmaking)
4. Baby Invasion
5. A Different Man
6. Soundtrack to a Coup D'Etat
7. Better Man
8. The Apprentice
9. Chime
10. The Shrouds
