The biggest thing I learned while trying to learn stick- is you gotta tone down your ego a notch and exercise some humility. You will lose real bad not being able to block a basic set up correctly or missing the same move 8 times in a row when you have an opening for it in the heat of a match, then get real mad (or at least I did) and immediately run back to pad to try and trying to restore your ego and win.

Don't do it... fight the urge.

Just keep plugging away at correcting mistakes little by little, even though it seems to take forever, especially when you lose. Just keep at it and you will improve quicker than any other methods of self-deception in practice mode only.
Never focus on landing a move or comobo how you want to, instead focus on landing it when an opponent lets you.

No one remembers how bad you were in the past, when you are beating them in the present.

My 2¢ regarding stick training...

If you're playing a charge character, then go ahead and take advantage of your corners. (So a square gate/restrictor plate on your stick would be ideal for charge motions.) And when you're first learning how to do other kinds of motions, it can help to ride the edge as well.

Eventually, assuming a more sensitive style stick along the lines of Sanwa or Seimitsu, you don't have to exaggerate the motions as much as you improve. Though it will still help to do that when you do supers.

And about supers, there is a difference between how different kinds of fighting games interpret the same double quarter-circle motion for supers that can throw you off...

For example, in SF3 you can get away with going down, down-towards, towards, down, down-towards, and then pressing the button before you technically reach the 2nd towards direction.

While in SF4, you have to reach the 2nd towards (and failing will make a dp motion come out)...although it allows you to skip the towards in the 1st quarter-circle. It's just weird like that. So in SF4 it pays to delay your button press a little bit, if possible.

Another difference between the two games is that the "reversal" window in SF4 is larger than SF3... Which is why it's so easy to mash special moves, supers, and ultras when you're recovering from anything in SF4.

My last tip about stick usage is that you can "piano" button inputs for specials and supers if what strength of input you want to use is not relevant. You do this by pressing each strength of the appropriate button (either punch or kick) in succession with different fingers. This takes advantage of the fact that the game registers a button input on both the push down and the release of a button for specials and supers.

So I'll likely be on soon. Cya there.

The biggest reason why I haven't bought a fighting game all gen, was because I was waiting to just get an arcade stick, haha. I said fuck it though and finally jumped on board.

Feels kinda bad when your execution is off on a pad, I'll still pick up a stick eventually, but it is a low priority.
cha cha wrote:sweet man, you've got a few weeks before SF4 rotates back in (check the OP for schedule) so you can practice up and join us! Also you may want to upgrade to the 2012 DLC patch as it adds 2 characters and rebalances the current cast... though it's not entirely necessary as we can still play you in either mode (the SF4 lobby allows to switch between AE and AE 2012 for players without DLC).

If you need some links to resources on a specific character and what not, lmk!
Sure, I was gonna go to Shoryuken.com but maybe the landscape has changed a bit when it comes to guides and advice.

Thinking of picking up Seth, or maybe I'll go back to El Fuerte, I loved him in SF4 but because I didn't own the game I could never learn some of his high execution techniques.

lulz. Went like this: found adapter, then had to finagle the PS3 back into HDMI mode since I had moved it to my LCD monitor, which took a while. THEN there was a friggin' long ass PS3 update that I had to do since I hadn't played the console in ages. By the time I was 'ready' to play, I was done for the night :\

At least I got some DC rounds in during all that.

so I played my friends in SSF4, man I felt like a sloth doing moves, I couldn't chain anything except 2 hit combos.

After a while I switched to Guile and kept it simple. I also died a lot not realizing that there are two ultras in this game and not 1 like in vanilla ~.~.
