- wario land 3 (GBC) (1/16/11) -- high
- metroid: other M (wii) (1/27/11) -- low
- kirby: canvas curse (DS) (2/4/11) -- medium
- NEW pac-attack (GBA) (2/7/11) -- medium
- NEW excitebike (NES) (2/18/11) -- medium

i played the version of pac-attack that's on the GBA pac-man collection. the game is definitely one of the better tetris-esque puzzlers. it doesn't reach the heights of puyo puyo and panel de pon, partly b/c it lacks a combo system and partly b/c its mechanics are a bit fussy, in many ways more like games like pipe dreams, but i def. recommend it for fans of the genre looking to try something new.

excitebike proved to be a game well worth playing, and holds up very well despite being a US launch title. has been rendered a bit obsolete by its wiiware successor, but the gameplay and controls are rock solid and it's a lot of fun.

as before, more extensive reviews can be found on my blog for anyone who's interested.

Just finished Indigo Prophecy last night. I wanted to finish it before I started in on Heavy Rain. I know they aren't exactly related (other than by developer) but it just seemed to make sense to finish Indigo first.

I also finished Uncharted about a month ago, my first PS3 game beaten (I got my first PS3 as a Christmas present).

Heavy Rain, Uncharted 2 and Psychonauts are next on the list with some Epic Mickey too.

castle of illusion - sega
disney's aladdin - sega
the lion king - sega
mickey mania: the timeless adventure of mickey mouse - sega
mickey mania: the timeless adventure of mickey mouse - sega cd
disney's the jungle book - sega
dungeon explorer - sega cd
phelios - sega
doom - 32x
kolibri - 32x

i know i have been updating this pretty frequently as of late, but never expected the last 3 titles to be so short and easy. also, having a 4 day weekend gave me plenty of time to be a bum. i def have mixed feelings about kolibri. very very similar to ecco, expect a dolphin was substituted for a humming bird. the game is broken into two level types: a shooter-esque and exploratory. shooter-esque because it somewhat resembles shooter. the exploratory levels are along the lines of ecco levels. there probably are more exploratory levels than "shooter" levels and i have no idea how sega-16.com can call this a shmup. 20 levels in all, but the first 19 are very short with the 20th being a decent length. not a bad game, but definitely isn't great either. any ecco fans might want to try this game out. shmup fans will be disappointed.
if you took a shit, please put it back

Excitebike is fun as a videogame, but those bikes would suck in real life, as this video demonstrates:

Serious Sam: The Second Encounter (PC)(FPS)
X-Men: Mutant Academy (PS1)(Fighting)
Street Fighter Alpha (PS2)(Fighting)
Extermination (PS2)(Survival Horror)
Spyro the Dragon (PS1)(Platformer)
Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! (PS1)(Platformer)
Myst III: Exile (PC)(Graphic Adventure)
Shaq Fu (GEN)(Fighting)
Spyro: Year of the Dragon (PS1)(Platformer)
God of War (PS2)(Action Adventure)
The Simpsons Game (PS2)(Platformer)
The King of Fighters '99 (PS1)(Fighting)
EOE: Eve of Extinction (PS2)(Beat 'Em Up)
Final Fight (Arcade)(Beat 'Em Up)

TOTAL: 14

Technically I beat this on the Capcom Classics Collection, Vol. 1, so if you want to be nitpicky I beat it on a PS2, even though it is the arcade version. I also own the SNES version, but the arcade one is infinitely preferable. And I'll give you one three-letter reason why: Guy. Guy is hands down my preferred character, followed by Haggar and then Cody. It's a shame the SNES port only featured Guy in the alternate Final Fight Guy release, which is now expensive enough to warrant me not currently owning it...yet.

Anyway, onto the game. Haggar's been elected mayor, but his daughter has been kidnapped by the evil Mad Gear gang to force him to allow them to keep doing their evil deeds. Unfortunately Haggar's far too much of a bad ass, so he enlists his daughter's boyfriend Cody and friend Guy to help him clean up the streets personally. What follows is a massive gang beatdown involving metal pipes, molotovs, guys in leotards, transsexuals, and even eating meat from an oil drum. Yes, all the makings of a great game.

Look, I like Final Fight. A lot. It takes me back to being five years old and attempting to stand on roller skates just so I could smack the crap out of a street punks with my bare hands. It looks quite good for 1989, it sounds good, characters are well-animated, and the game's fun, though not always easy. Each new enemy type offers a new arrangement of tricks to seriously ruin your day, though eventually palette swaps become the name of the game.

Controls are simple. You can attack for a small combo or throw if you're close enough, jump in the air, and even jumpkick your enemies. That's not to say it's without strategy however, as I managed to develop a few for handling different scenarios, such as the enemies-kick-the-barrel groups or the massive-crowd-of-angry-guys bit. I found Final Fight became infinitely easier if I knocked all of the enemies off screen and then stood at the edge punching away, as they would usually just walk into my fists until they died...the AI's not always the best, but from time to time it would get smart and go around me, which generally put me in a world of hurt as I would find myself getting my butt kicked from both sides. I built up a special type of hate for the knife-wielding ones, as they have both range AND mobility, which can hurt in a pinch.

Between the style, the gameplay, and the storyline, Final Fight feels like an '80s action film, which is to say it's awesome. It's like watching Sylvester Stallone's Cobra, mixed with a dash of Arnold Schwarzenegger's Red Heat and some of Bruce Willis' Die Hard.

And now I want to go watch an action film. Good news, Schwarzenegger's apparently cleared it with his agent to look for more work, so maybe we'll see him in The Expendables II.

I only played Final Fight CD one when I was like 6, so my memory of it is pretty fuzzy. How do the Final Fight games compare to Streets of Rage 2 nowadays? The reason I love SoR2 is because of the sheer variety of moves you can use, aswell as the different enemies varied attacks. It seems like Final Fight is more lacking in those departments, but having not played it in so long, it's hard to judge.

It's worth noting that the one and only time I played Final Fight was the same day I played Streets of Rage. A love for SoR began that day because I went out and bought it as soon as I could afterwards, but I had no Sega CD, so Final Fight was never on the cards.

I think Final Fight has a better style than Streets Of Rage. But the Streets Of Rage games play far better in my opinion.

2/19 The King of Fighters '97 (Wii)
2/19 Street Fighter II' (Wii / VC)
2/22 Metal Slug 3 (Wii)

Metal Slug 3 is amazing. Metal Slug 2 felt a little underwhelming after the original - this one added enough different weapons, transformations, and sequences to make it feel like a non-stop whirlwind. Best of all - Laser Ostriches!
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Thoughts on the Game(s)

Portal, I got this on Steam for free when the Mac version of Steam launched, so it has been sitting in my Steam library for awhile. While I had finished the version on the xbox360 (on a friends xbox), I was looking forward to giving it another go. I also finished all the advanced champers. Looking forward to Portal 2, if I ever get spare cash to buy it.
