1) The potential user base will buy Nintendo's own titles over third party ones.
EA can release the best selling Playstation/PC/Xbox game. It cannot release the best selling Wii U game.

2) Nintendo has backwards bussiness practices and is hard to work with. They are also very close-minded in many key areas (Online, price) and struggle to contact Western developers.
The first point fits with what Corn says, it needs to be easy to port from the current consoles, so there's virtually no work involved to get the title out on whatever platform.

On the second point, I can see online, especially in the past, but price? Am I missing something where they're off-base compared to other devs/publishers?
Yeah, Nintendo's been the best about price in recent years. Cheap hardware (though you could argue whether that's really a pro or a con); DS games were only $30 new, and Wii games were only $50 new; and today, Wii U games cost the same as PS4 and XBone games, and 3DS games cost the same as Vita games. I'm really not seeing any logic behind saying that they're closed-minded in price. The only thing I even remotely see is their licensing fees and agreements (especially egregious with WiiWare), but that's completely different from the price.

Not as much as you might think...
All I can tell you is that when I'm in public, I see kids on smartphones and tablets, I never see them with a 3DS.

I think the fact that we haven't gotten a new F-Zero in over a decade is an issue. And think about all the franchises Nintendo owns but hasn't touched in forever. I mean, wouldn't you like a new StarTropics for 3DS?
ElkinFencer10 wrote:Everyone seems to have forgotten (though, given that we're Westerners, I can't blame yall) is Fatal Frame. For the past two games (four if you include the remake of 2 and the spin-off Spirit Camera for 3DS), Nintendo has owned the rights to the series, and that is (at least IMO) an INCREDIBLE horror series.
You mean how Nintendo owned the rights to Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse on Wii, but refused to release it outside Japan? No, I didn't forget about that actually.

For the simple reason that you've already gone through that period where everything was new to you. Now you're just experiencing offshoots of stuff you already liked years ago.
It also works in reverse where people are introduced to the later iterations growing up and when they go back to discover the classics they don't see what all the fuss is about. The "Seinfeld is Unfunny" trope in action.

I've seen it a few times lately in regards to the hype over the new Doom with some younger gamers finding the original game overrated despite the fact that it did for PC gaming what Super Mario Bros. did for home consoles.
I ran into this with a friend of mine. He played the Legend of Heroes games on PSP and absolutely loved them. I kept trying to convince him to play Chrono Trigger, but he was convinced those LoH games were the best of all time. And they weren't even the Trails games!

I never said they didn't have bullshit localization policies (I mean, I had to import an Australian copy of the FF2 remake, and I'm still waiting on that damn Captain Rainbow fan translation patch to get finished), but localization shenanigans aside, that's a very much core aimed game series that's now exclusive to Nintendo hardware.

What's so bad about these games?

Nothing is bad - they just feature really straightforward "typical" JRPG gameplay.

I always felt that the Legend of Heroes series was born because Falcom felt "obligated" to make a standard turn-based JRPG after conquering the world of action-RPGs.

Oh, and those three games feature some horrible localization. They were also localized/released in the wrong order.

The series gets really good with TitS. From that point onward everything is, uh, the tits.

Yeah, pretty much what Bone said. They're solid games, but as uninspired as their title. It was even more frustrating to try to convince him when he hadn't even given Chrono a shot! I mean, you can't pronounce something "best ever" if you have no point of reference and refuse to try something different.

That being said, he was pretty young at the time, so I'll give him a pass. I guess.

I haven't played the LoH games in question. But screenshots like these

look to me to show a trilogy of well produced JRPG comfort food.

Localization aside, I don't mind genre pieces when they are well done. In that regard, I plan to give these games a shot someday. I won't be surprised if I find out they were underrated.

They are comfortable, I'll give ya that.

In all seriousness, I'm pretty sure I played the entirety of part III while laying bed.
