But how does the atmosphere compare between the two? I mean I thought Risen was a tropical island pirates kinda thing, versus Gothic with its darker Baltic flair? Or are they more similar than that?
Yes and no. Risen is a tropical island while Gothic is definitely more Baltic in its locale. However, both incorporate some similar locations(swamps, waterfalls, similar-looking ruins, heavily forested areas). Many of the enemies that appear are also either exactly the same or highly similar, such as the use of large birds or rodent-type critters as low level enemies. For instance, in Gothic, you fight giant moles, while in Risen, you fight porcupines. Gothic has giant wasps, while Risen has giant moths. Wolves, skeletons, goblins, giant lizards, and so on make up much of the bestiary. They're not entirely the same, particularly with the more powerful stuff, but there are definite similarities throughout.

Beyond that, the faction system, story breakdown, weaponry, system for gaining armor, interactivity with the world...these are all pretty similar beyond control changes.

Good info, thanks. Sounds like I need to get on Risen later this year once I get everything moved. Did you mess with Risen 2 or 3 any?

No, not yet. Eventually, but I have all of the Gothics to get to first.

I just found the Barron's daughter... his wife is still missing... I'm pretty sure I still have A LOT left in Act 1. I keep going back and forth on this game. One might I feel like it's great, the next I feel like it's a chore.

Gothic

Way more plot stuff has happened. I gathered up the rune stones I needed, but then while trying to gather up the fire mages to help the water mages, all hell broke loose in the old mine, and the Old Camp shuttered its doors, slaughtered all of the fire mages inside, labeled me a traitor, and declared war on the New Camp so they can get access to their mine. Now I am forced to go find a final wizard, the Necromancer, to bring him in to help.

Unfortunately for me, he's guarded by golems. I've managed to kill the stone and ice golems, but a fire golem now sits between me and my goal, and the fire golem is a prick. Since I can't use magic, I have to rely on magic spells via scrolls, and those can be expensive. In the meantime, I'm now operating in the orc lands just about full time. I've also killed...basically everything else in the dome outside of the orc lands save for a small group of fire lizards swarming a shipwreck. Fire lizards are nasty, so I'll worry about them later. There is also a bandit camp in the north I've skirted around but not dealt with. We'll see where I raid next, but the plot is moving right along.

Dark Souls II: SoTFS

Got my first Great soul from the Lost Sinner. Went down the well in Majula, killed so many rats, and was working on getting through the Gutter. Still seems like the design for this game just leans towards cheapness over tough-but-fair. They really like just throwing in a ton of enemies to overwhelm. Quite noticeable when you're a squishy mage

I'm having a heck of a time with The Pursuer. Might start over and do a different class.

I did too, until I used the ballistas. If you can manage to hit him with all the projectiles in a volley it'll take off like 80-90% of his health. Trick is getting him to be in the right place, and/or not destroy the ballistas before you get a chance to use them.
There also seems to just be a trend for mobs having a very far reach on top of being able to close distances in a split second. The 100% block shield you can find right after the Pursuer helps on some, but less so when it's against multiple enemies. The ruin sentinels or whatever were extremely bad for that for me, I wound up using a summon.

There are (at least) a couple places the Pursuer type appears in the Lost Bastille too, which I had no success with. Of course, those appear out of the ground, and then disappear if you exit the area they pop in, preventing anything but a head-on battle...which is kind of disappointing.

Supposedly, magic pays off more in the later game. I still haven't seen it get particularly powerful, and instead wind up using my flame sword a lot anyway.

Holy crap I forgot that the ballistae (apparently this is the plural? thanks spellcheck) could be used on this dude. That might help a bit.

I've heard that faith was a beast in the original version of this game, but I think it was lessened somewhat by the changes in SotFS. So ... got me.
