Un Chien Andalou just may be the pinnacle of what is good film. I don't think I've ever seen 15 minutes of footage define the true power of celluloid as finely as this one right here. People always jump right to the eye-cutting scene when discussing this flick, but really - there's so much more to it than that. I think that gets missed these days.

A classic with good reason, and this was my first time watching it on a non-computer monitor (thanks Netflix Wii).

And to think that THIS was made in 1929! Citizen Kane - eat your heart out.



Suzuki is incredible! I was continually wowed throughout my entire viewing. This film definitely seems to be more Leone-inspired than Branded to Kill, a lot of similar music queues and wide shots. Beautiful use of color throughout, and clever dialogue. I really dug it - maybe not as much as Branded to Kill - but I had a total blast!

Unfortunately, it's brought down by a story that doesn't really make any kind of sense and a disappointing ending. It probably should have stayed a ten minute short movie and not gotten the feature film treatment

Really? I though it made perfect sense... the story, I mean. Was anything hindering your attention?

And the 1989 film Dr Caligari was far more abstract and it made perfect sense, too. Especially if you know about the original.

Unfortunately I paid to see THE GREEN LANTERN. I went in with low expectations, and honestly, I should have lowered them a lot further. The movie just isn't a scrap of good, and I feel awful for the viewers who paid extra for 3D. How bad is THE GREEN LANTERN? I'd say on a scale of 1 to 10 of being complete and utter shit, I'd give it a 4; so it's not the worst movie ever, but it is still crap.

The movie also features everyone's favorite super villain: Super Big Screaming Face. The list of what the movie doesn't feature is a whole lot longer, including a cohesive plot.

As I left the theater, there was a group of kids wearing the green lantern ring (probably the same kids who "wooed!" at the opening credits like banshees than were silent until the ending credits), and obviously they were fans of the comic. They were discussing the movie, struggling with cognitive dissonance. I heard little of their conversation other than "what could have been better", but one of the kids summed it up pretty well. He said, "Well, it DID have the Green Lantern". Yup, THE GREEN LANTERN had the green lantern in it, and that's about it.

I watched House, an American horror movie from 1986.

This movie tries to be Steven King, but instead it's a bunch of disjointed odd parts - sometimes creepy, sometimes attempting humor, sometimes tense, sometimes trying to be sexy, at another point playing really inappropriate music. The main 'goal' of the plot changed at least 4 times, there's at least 3 main 'monsters' to the movie - I never learn if these creatures were cooperating or if they were just coincidental roommates that never crossed paths with each other. I never quite got to the bottom of what their powers were, either (one seems to be a shapeshifter, one's a poltergeist of some kind, one lives in the closet, one's an invincible zombie Vietnam veteran... To be honest I couldn't keep up.) However, it has a certain tongue-in-cheek quality to it that makes it campy, self-deprecating fun, and the production values are just high enough that it looks sort of polished even if it doesn't make any sense. Plus it's from 1986 so it was a cheap time machine for me.

Yeah, I enjoyed House for the same reasons when I first saw it. The Vietnam zombie in particular was pretty nifty in my opinion, and I kept making references to Cheers every time George Wendt appeared on camera.

Nothing much to appreciate except the fight scenes and the fact that Jason Statham needs to do more dramatic roles.

For starters, I didn't buy into the soul transfer thing. So what happens to the professor's soul? He just ceases to exist? What would he even go through with that? What was the point of making these little rag doll creatures? How is that going to save the world? He says the thing needs a soul, but it absorbs souls throughout the movie and that doesn't make it any weaker or give it a conscious. That stupid number six character annoyed me too. He basically knew what to do the whole movie but was too stupid to actually communicate it. Also, we see the machine get activated in the movie when it absorbs a soul, yet it somehow functioned throughout the war with no soul at all

The movie's plot has more holes than swiss cheese and the ending is predictable and boring.

First off, swiss cheese has "eyes", not "holes".

The professor's soul was divided across 9 rag dolls, and when the last one (ragdoll 9) got his part of the professor's soul, the professor just died because he had no soul.

Now, I haven't seen it in a while, but it wasn't the soul that powered the machine. It was something 9 found (I can't remember what it was), that activated the machine.

As for the ending, SPOILER ALERT!!!!:




When the machine was destroyed, the souls were released and merged with the clouds to create an energy that restored the world.



And it makes enough sense to make it more than just something pretty. And yes, it's very pretty.
