I do know about Koudelka but i'm under the impression that there's some really bizarre and iffy design choices that sounded off putting.

Tear Ring Saga i recently downloaded and it seem's like very much Fire Emblemish so i might start tackling that very soon.

EDIT: Actually it does really seem like that the english patch version (and the PSP one might be older version of it) has lot of game breaking glitches so that doesn't sound too appealing.

I did try the Langrisser a bit but i didn't like the underling system. Using heroes is free but you use money to get troop's to command under the CO's and because you don't have the option to grind money and don't know how many troop's you really need on mission it get's messy. I wouldn't be surprised if money was really a no issue but i'm not a psychic and i don't like not knowing whether it is or not.

I usually nowday's wait half year or a year between entries on a series so eventhough Shadow Tower is different and not part of the King's Field series i will still leave it for later.

Didn't have much to say about King's Field and little of it was positive but i wrote it about it on the other thread.

Koudelka is a very bizarre JRPG. The first time I played it, I thought it was junk. I revisited it years later, with a bit more patience in tow, and ended up absolutely loving it. If you can get into the experience, you'll find a truly unique JRPG. It's also the proper start for the Shadow Hearts series, and considering the original Shadow Hearts has a lot of callbacks to Koudelka, it's worth playing through Koudelka in that regard as well.

If you're looking for a good SRPG for PSP, consider this:

As far as recommending more PS1 JRPGs for you, I don't know your tastes all that well so it's all just shots in the dark. However, I will at least recommend to you my all time favorite PS1 JRPG:

Yes to both of these. Growlanser isn't terribly well-known here, but it's really solid stuff. It's also been a long time since I went through Vagrant Story, but it's totally worth playing. The battle system is a bit like a more complex Parasite Eve, if you've played that.

I'been meaning to play the Growlanser PSP game for a good while now and i might check it out next eventhough it's spiritual successor to Langrisser. I actually got back playing Langrisser today thanks to the level select cheat which allows you to go back and grind.

Still a mixed bag. It seems like it has a lot more variety than other games of this sort but it's also awfully confusing. It doesn't seem to make much sense what's strong against what. The game doesn't make some of the archers for instance to sound like they are meant for anti air only but when you attack regular units with them they do basically zero damage.

Yet the horse archer for some reason easilly destroys all the foot units. I haven't had the opportunity to test those other two archer unit's against air units so it's left to be seen whether that's the case.

Anyways that's not the only occasion of that sort of oddity. It seems like sometimes a enemy unit of same exact type might be very effective against an unit that on the other map easily vanquished the same sort of unit.

Either i'm missing something or this game is messy.

I have tried Vagrant Story for couple of times and the story seems really interesting and it's very cinematic but i just can't get into the gameplay unfortunately. I even tried to use someones elses save where the character is super leveled just to enjoy the story but the combat is not the only problem of the game so that wasn't success. It's the sort of game i either should just watch the cinematics on youtube or resort to playing it guide in hand.

I guess i could give Koudelka at least a try at some point. It's not very long so even if it turns out that i can't get into it then at least it doesn't take too long to finnish it.

Growlanser is definitely a different beast from Langrisser. I have never really been able to get into the latter, but loved the former. Growlanser has a lot more RTS elements to it as far as combat goes.

But... did the voice acting ever improve? The PS2 game I played was abysmal in that department.

I'm more tolerant for JRPG's than anime, but man it was Star Ocean 3 levels of bad or worse.

I don't remember it being bad in that regard. Actually, I think it's missing a lot of voice acting that was in the Japanese version.

What are some of your favorite JRPGs, Kuruwin? Knowing what you like would inform better suggestions.

Awwwwww yeah!

How you likin' the music in the game? I think it's phenomenal. One of the best soundtracks on the SNES, in my opinion. Dat title screen theme when the letters fade in uuuunnnnnfffffff......

So far I love The 7th Saga and its music, and especially the darker aesthetics. It's been a blast thus far. Very underrated game. Kind of pisses me off how good it is, because I should have played this years ago. I was dissuaded by years of forum members telling me it was trash. Alrighty then. God forbid anyone play a JRPG where you have to actually put effort in to succeed.
