Not a separate genre.

This is only tangentially metal-related, but Refused played on Fallon last night. Wasn't The Shape of Punk to Come an outcry against corporate meddling? Wasn't that why Refused dissolved in the first place? What a crock of shit.

Fair enough. It's at least as much of a subgenre as "unblack" metal.

@Forlorn Drifter: so-called "unblack metal" isn't "black metal that isn't directly attacking religion", it's basically straight up christian black metal. There's actually quite a few black metal bands that don't sing about religion at all, Immortal being a HUGE example. Nobody would dare call Immortal an "unblack" band.

Just going by how it was explained to me at various concerts and such. I'm not big on a lot of this cutting up of metal into such specific genres. There's a ton of different ways you could cut them up, but I keep them in around 10 or so different main genres.

Also, I wonder if Glory Hammer will come out as good as Alestorm...

Heavy, Thrash, Power, Doom, Death, Black

I guess then you also have stuff like Avant-Garde and Prog and fusion stuff like Sludge, Crossover, Grindcore, etc.

Those are all you really need. Everything else is just a descriptor.

First of all, I listen to most metal. Classic or modern, radio-friendly or hardcore, Christian or Black Metal; I'll listen to it all. Except I'm not into the rap-metal hybrid stuff that was popular in the late 90s, or straight Death Metal.

That said, you have to be in denial to not see that there are indeed sub-genres of metal. There are definetly very different, and distinct styles of metal out there and every one of those subgenres have their cornerstones bands that represent them. Power Metal, Progressive Metal, Glam Metal, Doom Metal, Death Metal, Speed Metal, Thrash Metal, Melodic Death Metal, Nu-Metal, Industrial Metal, Black Metal. These subgenres can be identified and catagorized without too much problem if you're a metal-head.

I consider pretty much everything Queso didn't cover to be either another crossover genre (easy enough to identify) or an abomination (like groove metal). If you try to mix too much in, it's guaranteed to be absolutely terrible.

The ones BD suggested are mainly what I cut it into. Past that, your getting too descriptive for my like. I will point out some of the smaller or sub genres of those in order to make a point or describe a band without having a sample. (Examples being the metal/rockabilly crossovers and such)

I listen to a large variety of metal, don't get me wrong. But people spend way too much time on labeling it, which I like to make fun of. Just something I do.

Also, Nightwish.

I like to make fun of Nightwish, too.

My favorite genres of metal and bands include:

Power metal:(Blind Guardian, Yngwie Malmsteen, Stratovarius, Symphony X, Sonata Arctica, Iced Earth, Hammerfall, Helloween)

Death Metal:(Children of Bodom, Black Dahlia Murder, Opeth)

Black Metal:(early-Bathory, Celtic Frost, Dimmu Borgir)

Viking Metal:(Bathory, Falkenbach, Tyr, Enslaved, Turisas)

Just whatever you do, keep deathcore away from me, because I have a few choice words to say about it.

On the bolded area...

1. Not a genre, that's basing the genre on lyrics, which is wrong.
2. Y U NO LIST AMON AMARTH?
